I mean I''m not saying he's a spud, of course he isn't. He's a brutal player. It's just a substantial hole in his record.
Kohli that everyone loves has a similarly bad record in odis too. Only 2 50s both in champions trophies both against Asian sides

Jaya is a poor choice if picking 5 real bowlers. Batting is too fragile. As a 6th bowler, he doesn't add much above Viv. If he's sharing the 5th bowler job, he's useful. Still like Watson more though. Reckon he is a comparable bat and a vastly superior bowler, even if the style is a worse fit.
Watson is a solid choice too, Jaya becomes a personal choice after a point

Jayasuriya is definitely better than Viv with the ball though

Jaya is definitely better than Viv (quality + variety). But if you are playing someone like Kapil as a 5th bowler (like the last time this exercise was run), either of them are probably getting <2 overs a game. 2 overs of dodgy bowling vs 2 overs of slightly dodgier bowling makes little difference.

Here is the lineup so far. I shifted Tendulkar to no.2 since posters made the observation he would rather not face the first new ball.
Weird isn’t it? You wouldn’t think such a small thing matters, but he averages 36 across 47 games striking at 82 as #1, and 50 across 293 games striking at 88 as #2.

I don't think the batting is fragile. Positions 2 to 6 are the most productive batsmen ever in those slots.

I think most successful cricket sides can afford one loose cannon like Jaya, Sehwag, Gilly to blast off. The cushion of having a deep batting order justifies the risk, and the reward is high.

But Jaya's spin is underrated. Much better than Tendulkar or Viv.

Except if you are playing in the SC. Then Jaya would likely get 5-8 overs.

How did Rohit Sharma even get into consideration here when he averages 25 in tourney finals across 10 matches in this format?
Why do you ask it like you already don't know the answer? Your criteria is not everyone's criteria.

It's relative. A team of similar strength would also be playing the same 2-5, and possibly 6. Picking 6 options who are not realiably good for runs is a lot.

He bowled 5.x overs in the SC playing for a team that usually only had 2 quality options. Why would he possibility be bowling 5-8 overs if there are 5 ATG/ borderline ATG options? Even Viv is going to take an over away from him sometimes

Okay you've convinced me with the loose cannon theory. Change my vote for Watto to the loosest of loose cannons and a much better spinner than Jayasuriya:

Come on down Shahid Afridi (he can even bite the ball to get it reversing).

There are plusses and minuses with a regular or blaster bat as opener.

In real play, having a blaster who is hit and miss at the top with a solid batting lineup backing him has been a tried and tested tactic. The team gets an initial burst of momentum when it clicks and backs itself to recover when it doesnt. A regular bat will be more consistent but the opposition will still feel in the game in the first 5-10 overs. The fear factor of Gilly at the top added to Australia's intimidation as an ATG side IMO.

And you could replace Jaya with Lara but then lose your extra spinner.

Lara and Tendulkar may give you 50/0 off 10 more often but once Jaya and Tendulkar give you 80/0 off 10 you basically have won half the game there.

He bowled 5.x overs in the SC playing for a team that usually only had 2 quality options. Why would he possibility be bowling 5-8 overs if there are 5 ATG/ borderline ATG options? Even Viv is going to take an over away from him sometimes
Because in the SC, the likelihood Kapil or Klusener or a fourth seamer gets taken for runs in between is higher and having another Jaya on to shift momentum and speed through the middle overs with his darts is a useful option for a captain to have. And on really spinning wickets, Jaya can be an attacking option as he has shown before.

ODI cricket is more about adaptability to sudden shifts in momentum which favors teams with more options rather than specialists as it is in test cricket.

get Wasim in the team for maximum efficiency with bitten ball
