Even those not good enough to be professionals can go +1, +2 etc.

Scratch or better can try to qualify for The Open can't they, and the US Open IIRC. Probably why they're called "Open". What this has to do with anything, I don't know. I'm good at pointless posting me..

AB de Villiers played off a scratch handicap in golf, was selected to train at the Nick Botterelli tennis academy when he was twelve and played Craven Week rugby for the Blue Bulls. I think I read somewhere that he was also an accomplished swimmer.
Herschelle Gibbs was also a very good athlete and held a number of school records.
Mark Boucher played squash for South Africa.
Kevin Pietersen *ahem* represented Kwa-Zulu Natal in swimming.
