Billed as the battle of the all-rounders it was a one day match and there could be only one winner. The Cricket Web side featured 3 all roudners in Cloete, Richards and Kearsley, Lancashire had Flintoff and Schofield. The papers before hand were full of the impending battle, the Times had a quote from Kearsley “Flintoff’s eaten too many pies and Schofield’s about as accurate as Diego Forlan.” Schofield was In the Telegraph saying “Cloete and Richards are the best comedy duo since Morecambe and Wise, Kearsley who’s he?”

With Malone and Gray still on England duty the team was adjusted somewhat, Chaulk replaced Bennett and Hall was replaced by Neil Pickup as Eclipse was chosen to open the bowling. Pickup was delighted with his callup but it meant that he would have to relinquish his DJ Duties, Bennett takin his place on the decks and playing a bit too much Gerry and the Pacemakers for the teams liking.

After losing the toss Eclipse and Smith got a great start putting on 58 for the first wicket but after the partnership was broken the Web were poor, no one reached 50 and only Jellett(24) and Weber(27) made any impression on the scorers as CW subsided to 183 all out. Flintoff took 3-30 and Schofield 3-31 as Lancs won round one of the all rounders battle. CW failed to use 5 overs.

Eclipse took an early wicket but Driver and Flintoff played well for a while, at 90-2 Lancs looked in control and Flintoff made 50 but Cloete and Pickup came together and took 6 wickets between them to bring CW back in to the match. Halsey and Richards then managed to pick up the tail to record a close 10 run victory and Cloete was named man of the match to get one over Flintoff although Pickup deserves a mention for his first significant contribution of the season.

Bennett caused some laughs as DJ, putting on ‘Together Forever’ by Rick Astley as Eclipse and Brad Smith walked out to bat and Jason Donovan’s ’Too Many Broken Heart’s’ when lady’s boy Bluefox came out to bat. He’s unlikely to be asked to do it again though.

The plants were wilting in the garden of opportunity for those Cricket Web players that were hoping for a place in the Super Cup final at Lords, the C&G Trophy match against unfashionable Worcestershire provided the last opportunity for the players to stake their claim and also provided the opportunity to keep alive hopes of another Lords appearance this season. The ranks were reinforced by the returning Malone and Gray, replacing Jellett and Richards respectively and Brad Smith was replaced by Blewy. The preparations were interrupted by the appearance of the ECB Banned Substances Testing Unit at the nets the day before the match but after Ash Chaulk almost did a ‘Rio’ the men in lab coats departed satisfied, albeit with some choice graffiti on the side of their cars. The results will be available soon lets hope there’s no bad news.

The match followed the usual Cricket Web formula of completely outclassing their opponents yet somehow turning it in to a close match. The Bowling was professional if not excellent, the failure to break the 9th wicket partnership after reducing them to 146-8 enabled them to get to 196. Halsey and Pickup were the best of the bowlers with 3 wickets apiece.

4 Down for 57 a half century partnership from Cloete(68) and Gray(39) steadied the ship, A late flurry of wickets left Halsey and Kearlsey at the wicket with 27 needed and only the ‘ferret’ Pickup to come. The two though played composed innings to give CW the victory by 2 wickets with 7 spare overs.

In to the next round of the C & G, next match Super Cup Final!

The tickets for the final had sold out in a record 4 hours, people were doing anything to get tickets - Eclipse sold a pair of comps for 200 apiece and Malone gave his to a couple of Webettes, who were denied permission to perform by the stuck up Lords committee though they got their own back by performing a synchronised streak in the closing overs. CW prepared hard for the match and there were tears the night before when team was released. Only one change from the previous match - the in form Ferd coming in for Blewy. The Street’s ’Dry you’re eyes’ might have been a useful song ro put on the dukebox, Bennett in particular taking non-selection hard, though not many knew why he thought he had a chance of being in the side.To celebrate the final appearance the squad released a cover of the Jonny Tillotson’s classic ’Poetry in Motion’ which peaked at 89 in the charts.

The Morning of the match dawned cloudy but dry and the Web fancied their chances when they won the toss and elected to bowl.

The very first over nearly featured a wicket but Cloete’s iron fingers spurned the catch and enabled Butcher to survive. He was only to make 23 though and it was Kearsley who speared a ball through his defences. Ratcliffe suffered the same fate at the other end from Malone, 57-2, that brought Ramprakash to the wicket. He and Thorpe added 58 before Thorpe became Halsey’s first victim. Halsey was bowling well but at the other end Cloete and Pickup were getting murdered by Ramprakash. Hollioake and Tudor merely had to play bit parts as Ramprakash pounded the bowlers. Pickup went for 68 from his 10 and Cloete an amazing 82. Halsey ensured some hope for CW with 5-55 from his 10 but 283-9 was a daunting prospect. Ramprakash’s incredible 115 lasted just 87 balls.

All out assault was how Ferd saw the chase, shame that he couldn’t follow through with it as a rush of rash shots saw CW reduced to 61-4. Cloete was at the crease determined to make up for his fielding and bowling and he was joined by England star Gray and together they took the game to Surrey adding 128 for the 5 th wicket before Jellett departed for 46 trying to up the scoring rate. Then Weber, Malone and Kearsley all departed sharpish and after Halsey had hit 3 lusty boundaries he was also out to leave the Web 225 for 9 with only the rabbit’s rabbit Pickup left. After surviving 4 balls and a close LBW shout. Pickup faced just one more ball as Cloete hit 19 of the next three overs and kept the strike but in the next over, with 2 dot balls starting the over, Cloete tried to smash the third and missed outside the off stump. Then he tried it again next ball and unfortunately found Ramprakash in the deep to end the innings and a fine knock of 120 from the all rounder.

The Surrey boys take the honours again, as they did in the NL last season and Cricket Web’s first visit to Lords ends in 38 run defeat. Disappointing but we will bounce back!

um consideing i only went for 29 of 10 overs i would call that support,

Some of CW’s less salubrious characters took the cup final defeat rather badly and the coach driver was forced to make a detour round to the Oval on the way back so that the aforementioned rascals could relieve themselves on the Surrey wicket. It was all a bit of fun until, during a hearty chorus of ’Were going to **** on the Surrey tonight,’ there came a sound of a dog snarling and the Webbers were forced to leg it from the offending mongrel. The ’break in’ made the LWT news bulletin the next day, so its probably not wise to name the ringleaders. *cough* Halsey *cough*.

Obviously there was the inevitable come down from an emotionally draining day, just 2 days later they were to be out on the field at home to Kent in the national league. Urgent message were issued to the caterers along the lines of “Get some extra pies in, Robert Key and Mark Ealham are coming” and one squad member left a few application forms for Weight Watchers in the away dressing room. The team was shuffled around a little for this match, Pickup was dropped for Rueben Thomas, back from injury and so was Cloete, partly for his bowling display and partly because his hundred had taken a lot out of him and he needed a rest. Mr Wright took the DJ responsibilities.

Put in to bat the Web made a decent start through Ferd and Eclipse but, after a 50 run stand they lost 3 wickets for 4 runs and were plunged in to trouble. Bluefox, Gray and Weber were unable to give Richards any more than brief support but Malone batted well for his 37, Richards top scored with 49. Pie-man Ealham was the pick of the Kent bowlers as CW were bowled out for a disappointing 189. More interesting was the entry music for the batsmen, not sure whether this was the batsmen’s decision or Mr Wright using his own initiative but there were some interesting choices of music. Chaulk walked out to Leo Sayer’s ‘You make me feel like dancing’ Malone didn’t look impressed when he went out to Placebo’s ‘Nancy Boy’ though.

In reply Kearsley struck early and both Richards and Malone bowled well but Kent’s innings was held together by Robert Key’s 100 and he received excellent support from Midlane and Ealham and despite 2 late wickets from Malone the visitors got home with 3 overs to spare.

From heartbreak at Lords it was perhaps expected that a below par performance would follow, it was just hoped that would be enough to beat Kent, which it nearly was. First NL loss of the season.
