I came across a nine aside cricket tournament for eleven and twelve year olds.

Could this be the future of cricket 50 years from now?
Each player in a nine person team has a genuine role. In an eleven person side there is usually someone batting number 8 who doesn't get much of a bowl either at club cricket level.
Also with nine a side you need 8 wickets rather than ten wickets to close out an inning. This is better because when number 10 and 11 are batting in a regular game of cricket is a frustrating period where the game isn't advancing.

Rest of the stuff is fine but it's really hard to see eleven and twelve years dominating to an extent where they push out all other ages from international cricket.

Most junior sports have modified rules for two reasons. Greater opportunity to participate and, in the case of contact sports, player safety.

Having been involved in sport at a school level, I know that kids, especially the more sporting talented ones, can't wait to play what they call 'proper rules'.
