Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

It is C9 policy, not the commentators.

It directed at people who dont know anything about cricket and at the level of 10 year boys.

If you ever get the chance to hear them away from C9 they are good to listen to, even Ian Healy
Yeah but do you think a lot of 10 year old boys are watching these test matches? The demographic of a Channel 9 test match audience is generally slightly older men.

Anyway, it was during the 2014 ODIs that I was quite dumbfounded when Hussey of all people talked about ABD as "he's a bit like Maxwell". Come on dude..you've played so much against him, you were in that Perth test match in 2012, and that's what you have to say about him?

Again its C9 policy
Australia first, second and third, everyone else nowhere.

People who dont know anything about cricket wont know about anyone outside of Australia, hence the comparison to an Aussie

It becomes a jingoisitic circle.

Anyway I'm amazed anyone here actually listens to them, watching it in silence is better and then the radio is so much better.

IMHO :)

Manohar had earlier made it clear India would not play in the UAE as desired by the PCB, and speaking to the National on Saturday, he reiterated that stance once again. "Presently, there is no question [of playing in the UAE]. We gave an option to Pakistan, asking them whether they will come to India. Pakistan was to get back to me, they haven't got back to me." Asked whether there were any specific reasons he was opposed to India playing in the UAE, Manohar said there were none.
Surprisingly frank stance by the BCCI there

Shameless

Shameless reporting by cricinfo, yes.

Cricinfo have twisted his words (notice that the article has now been taken off the interwebs).

Here are his exact words (from another cricinfo article): "We are not asking any permission from the government. We are not playing in UAE. That is certain. There are reasons. But I don't want another debate on that. So I will not tell you the reasons."

It is widely known that the BCCI does not want India playing in the UAE ever since the match fixing scandal broke out in the early 2000s (That IPL during the elections was the sole exception, and Shashank Manohar apparently was opposed to the UAE move back then too). Obviously it would not be prudent to state the reasons publicly since that leaves them open to getting Chris Cairned.

I am not sure if this is the right place for this topic, or whether this conversation has taken place in another thread, but this is an interesting piece listing some numbers the reflect the changes in Australian pitches over the last few years.

Numbers Don't Lie: Not so hard to bat in Australia anymore | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo

Since January 2012, 25% of Tests in Australia have been drawn, up from 13% in the eight-year period between 2004 and 2011
That's an astonishingly high percentage of tests ending in draws.

In these last four years, Australia have a 14-1 win-loss record in Tests at home, with a batting average of 50.34; in England and in Asia during the same period, they have a win-loss record of 2-12, and a batting average of 29.06
This reflects the contrast in Australia's batting performances, from piling up 400 runs for 1 wicket in 1 day, to getting bowled out for under 200 quite often overseas.

Given the concerns about bowlers "workloads" and the amount of cricket being played perhaps the oldtimers had it right with a rest day during a test match.

Perhaps it's time to bring back the rest day..

I can just imagine England needing 60 runs with 4 wickets left to regain the Ashes and then they stop for a rest day

I could die

Touring teams have such a hard task ahead of them to be competitive in Test matches now that they seem to have inadequate tour matches before the big games start. I was wondering why they don't play the one day series first. Do they do this in other countries? If New Zealand had a fair warm up they may have been a serious chance to trounce Australia. Playing a one day series first, would give the touring team a chance to get a bit more used to the pitches they will be playing on. As ODI pitches are more uniform, it is the ideal form to play while batsmen have not acclimatised. Yeah? Nah? FO?

I agree, but not because of getting used to the pitches, I just prefer that players don't go into a first test looking very undercooked. Not to mention the fact that ODIs after the tests always have no hype behind them.

Totally agree. I don't even know if England and Pakistan played any ODIs at all?

Whatever it takes!!!
Yeah. I don't think we should mess with home advantage and pitches much. But what the ICC can do is step in to ensure the visiting sides are as well prepared as they can be before the test series starts. If it means playing the T20s and ODIs first, or maybe ensuring better quality warm up games on better pitches, they should seriously step in.

In all the waaahhhing about the pitches, what is being forgotten is that every home board is going out of their way to sabotage the visiting sides preparations before a test series. THAT is what should be thrown out.

Yea that's been the new trend lately hasn't it? The visiting team can try their best to arrange as many warumups as they like, but if the home side is going to make them play on pitches that don't represent what's coming up in the Tests, and select sides to deny them practice against a certain style of bowling, then there really is no point is there?

In that sense, ODIs/T20s before Tests may actually help sides prepare, despite the difference between formats. There is definitely going to be some sort of overlap between the players involved at the very least.

Having said that...the ODIs and T20s did nothing to prepare South Africa for what they were to face in the Tests, so...*shrug*
