Ha, I didnt want to point out the coincidence of me writing that article and then soon after this thread springing up.

More than likely competely unrelated, but certainly a coincidence.
Good read. In addition, cricket (as well as other sports) really demonstrates so much about life - self-discipline, perseverance and beyond. Truly a beautiful sport.

dunno about cricket being for the "cleverest". i mean if you want to dumb cricket down its pretty easy, man runs in with ball, tries to hit sticks, batter tries to hit ball. fielder chases ball. some of my cricket mates are absolute dimwits. some are deadset geniuses, others like me are just in it for :drunk:

i've found rugby union crowds to reasonably well educated, yes theres dimwits but alot of my rugby mates are like civil engineers or physios and the like. then theres league...dont klnow many guys playing league at uni...not having a shot at em, we need builders and stuff.

Considering that virtually everyone in India is a cricket fan and many of them are ignorant (to put it nicely), it's tough to claim that cricket fans are the most intelligent. That really doesn't make much of a difference because the type of people who follow a sport is often influenced by cultural, geographical and social factors. In my opinion, you have to analyze the nuances of the sport objectively.

By that standard, cricket is a very cerebral sport. Batsmen use timing, placement and precise footwork far more than power; bowlers use various types of swing, cut, seam, spin, variations in pace, lines, lengths; tactics come into play with field placements, bowling changes and much more. I could go on and on. Another cerebral sport is (american) football, despite the notion that it's all about power, ferocity and knocking the crap out of the opposition. I've played soccer (football), tennis, basketball, baseball and more but cricket is the cerebral sport IMO.

You'd struggle to convince me that any sport, let alone American football, is up there with cricket in terms of tactics and thinking tbh.

Certainly I have met many very bright people who loved cricket, and it's a sport with a lot to appreciate on a range of levels, but I don't think there's any particular connection between intelligence and being a cricket fan. It's a sport with a great deal of mass appeal, after all.

Definitely. That was just a peculiar example of a cerebral sport that I thought I'd mention.
