My Swedish friend once jokingly commented: "It's because the way you throw a cricket ball elicits a hunting response from the polar bears"

Rather more seriously I would guess that cricket was exported to the imperial holdings of Britain by English colonists and took root as a fabric of society there. Why cricket took root among the masses of the subcontinent has puzzled me, but there had been a consistent ruling class of cricket playing Englishmen in power for over a century, somthing that everywhere else in europe lacked.

Because cricket is assosciated heavily with England everywhere in Europe and nobody likes the English. No offence, guys.

That's obviously true to some extent, but the no-less-English rugby union took root in France, who we've certainly had our differences with over the years, so there has to be other factors in play.

Yeah, i don't really know enough on that to comment. Ed Smith, in his latest book, came to the conclusion that which sports catch on in which countries is simply a random distribution with no real reasons behind them.

All I would say is that at this moment in time, from my experience in Ireland and France, cricket is seen as an English toff sport only watched by extremely boring people. Why it came so that they feel that way is one for the sociologists to spoof bull**** reasons for.

 Well i wouldn't say that but i get mocked a good bit for it. Especially since i spent the entire summer working in a little local bar. "Test ****ing cricket? Who the **** watches that!" was the most common of comments.

Fair play to ya. Reasonable Irish contingent round here now, a couple showed up after the WC (and fair enough, that is why the ICC make the WC a truly global event) but UIMM DCC_Legend was here before then and I get the impression you've been following it a while. What made you start watching?

No one thing really, in 2000 it was something i'd watch very occasionally and between then and now it's grown very gradually into an obsession. Obviously a few things helped, the 2005 Ashes being the most obvious catch. Suffice it to say, though, that if cricket was exclusive to Sky Sports as it is now, i'd have nothing to do with it today.
