Just occurred to me that had Zaremba been playing he could have got an entire Sussex squad this way - filled it up with brothers who's played for the county.

The other thing I meant to mention about Micky Stewart is that he prevented Henry Blofeld from becoming perhaps the most unlikely Test player ever. On a tour of India in 1963-64 he rose from his sickbed to take his place in the starting line-up when Blofeld, accompanying the team as a journalist, was being lined up to play. Stewart took no part in the match after tea on the first day. I'm sure that Blowers, sticking to his diet of cake and champers, would have made it through the game.

Going to nail my county colours to the mast straight away and select Micky and Alec Stewart. Alec needs no introduction, England's most capped Test player for one, but Stewart senior was a pretty useful player in his own right, an opening bat who might have played many more times for England if he hadn't been contemporary with the likes of Boycott and Edrich, and a world class close fielder who at one time was the only man to take seven catches in an innings (since equalled I think). He captained Surrey for most of the 60s, not a golden age in the club's history it has to be said but did lead them to the Championship in 1971, his final season. Later England's first full-time coach.

Might've just taken Alec & his former brother-in-law ahead of the old man, myself. Tightish call tho.

I did consider Butch, yes, but I felt that Micky's short-leg fielding was a stronger second string than Butcher's medium pace and inconsistent slip catching. Early front runner for captain too.

Alec I feel doesn't get the respect he deserves on this forum. Nearly all who played with and against Sir Alec Bedser rated him as one of the finest seamers of all time. If Don Bradman could include him in his dream XI, then that is good enough for my families XV.

Eric, unfortunately with his first class record, never managed to play test cricket. Had to compete with Laker for so much of his career. Useful with the bat, not sure if he will make my final XI, but will prove a useful 2nd spin bowler behind Gibbs.
