Not so sure mate. Gilly gets painted as a paragon of virtue (not his fault btw), but he has his flaws like everyone else. It's times like this I wish Adam Gilchrist was Aust captain. He seems like he would more likely have the character to diffuse the situation better than Ponting. Anyone agree?
But because the Aust selectors have always avoided making wicket keepers Australian captain, then it wasn't to be.
A lot of people here are pointing out the appeal on Dravid in the second innings as proof he's a cheat or something while conveniently ignoring of course the 1st innings lbw appeal v Ponting. I mean, what's good for one should be good for t'other shouldn't it? Surely Singh and the close in fielders knew that Ponting wasn't out. Does their appealing make them cheats?
Players get these reputations in the media/ public whether they like them or deserve them. Gilly as some sort of angel is one, but I don't see how he's ever painted himself that way. It's what others perceive of him that gets him that reputation.
As for this issue itself, I'm quite happy for any captain of a team to report to the umpires anytime one of their players have been racially abused - I dont care where you're from or who you say it to, it's just not on. Bare in mind, neither the players in the middle nor the captains can know whether the alleged comment has been picked up at the time they report it, can they?
