Combining ODI and Test records, who are the 5 greatest cricketers ever?

Kapil Dev above Shane Warne?
As a bowler, not even close.

When Kapil retired, he was the highest wicket taker in one day cricket - He had 253 wickets at an average of 27.4, SR of 44 and ER of 3.72. Add to it his explosive batting with an unimaginable strike rate of 95, he is a great asset to the team. Maybe that’s what he meant.

Still don't think he should be above the likes of Marshall, Warne and Chappell.

Kapil is a better ODI player than Chappell in Tests and better Test player than Chappell in ODIs. It's the one I don't think is particularly close here. Marshall can slide a bit higher, but he wasn't really much special in ODIs. Warne is close but I will have Kapil in ODIs and Warne in Tests around equal and will just have Kapil in Tests over Warne in ODIs.

Marshall was very good in ODI if not outstanding. Kapil himself has his issues in Test. Away averages of 26/33. His numbers also didn't really suffer much from playing for a long time so while his durability was good, it didn't undersell his quality that much. I think those three are just higher quality cricketers. Much better in Tests and very good in ODI; Warne in particular on the second part.

It’s complicated

I rate Sachin and Richards much higher than Kallis as a test batsman.

But if I have to choose one in my team I would choose Kallis. His all round talents is far more important to the team than just Sachin or Richards’ batting alone.

I'd have Kallis a bit higher in that list

Let's agree to disagree then. Chappell is the one I am most sure of, I would probably rate them around equal in Tests as well; Chappell just slightly ahead. Greg was pretty great in ODIs, but not really close. Marshall is the one with the best argument honestly. Warne, I think Kapil did better included both formats. That longevity is special though. Kapil wasn't Great overall away, but is near ATG in WI and Australia with the ball and had his fair share of impact knocks to justify his average not being inflated.

Kapil's durability is very good, but it isn't a case of an extreme career length affecting stats. He was a long way from being great in both disciplines, albeit very serviceable in his weaker discipline. Players like that are difficult to rate, but I think each of those three guys are simply higher quality.

I don't agree with that. I do think you are giving Kapil a rather hard time there. He was a player better than his stats suggests on the surface. Had a number of quality innings though very inconsistent and basically carried the bowling of a very weak team on his back. I would rate a durable player who did the same thing all his career over one who was Great at times and **** in others, given both both have identical stats. Hence, in an ATG case, Sachin over Viv or Laxman over Yousuf.
In Tests they were, but Kapil is atleast a tier ahead of everyone of those 3 in ODIs easily.

True

In 1980s he was just a special and unique cricketer.

A good bowler with a decent average and good economy rate. There were quite a few like that.

A lower order explosive batsman with a higher strike rate than Viv Richards. Very few were like that.

Combine both those qualities and he becomes a very rare talent especially for that time period.

He was an extremely aggressive batsman for the time. Would still be aggressive now of course.

I would argue you are rather underrating Kapil's bowling. He was a legit Great ODI bowler, as was Imran. Stats seldom is really reflective in ODIs, especially in the late 70s and the 80s.
