Classifying the all-rounders

tony p

State Regular
Balanced All-rounder, Eddie Barlow
Batting All-rounder, Garry Sobers
Bowling All-rounder, Richard Hadlee.

Had Mike Procter played enough Test Cricket, he would have got Barlow's spot.

Barlow only took 40 wickets in 30 tests (although took lots of wickets for a World XI vs England), so I'd call him a batting allrounder.

Line and Length

Cricketer Of The Year
As many CW discussions on individual cricketers often takes, for obvious reasons, Bradman as THE greatest, I am gong to look beyond THE greatest all rounder when nominating the following.

Balanced All-Rounder - Miller
Batting All-Rounder - Hammond
Bowling All-Rounder - Hadlee

Goddard has a way better bowling average than batting average yet was an opening batsman and someone I imagine had more security in the team through his batting. Interesting case IMO

Miller is better.
All round things only Botham has done:
  1. Scored 10+ hundreds and took 10+ fivers
  2. Scored a hundred and took a fiver in same game five times; no one else has done it more than thrice
  3. Achieved 800+ ICC rating points as both batsman and bowler
It's not Miller, it's Botham.

Botham is a good case for stats not being synonymous with averages, which is in somebody's signature here but I forgot who

Too bad we can't crop the second half of Botham's career out.

Aubrey Faulkner is another interesting one. He is the only cricketer afaik who achieved #1 batting, bowling and all rounder ranking at some point in his career. Obviously he had fewer players to compete with. His peak ratings in both disciplines was in 600s, well behind Botham's.

Interesting he ever rose above Hobbs and Barnes considering their insane averages during that time

His bowling average for example is solid for today's standards but quite high for the golden age

Faulkner’s peak rating in batting is 877.
Really lucky to have no.1 bowling rankings. After Barnes decided not to play 5th test,1914 and retired from internationals.
Well deserved ranking in batting.
