I think Haynes was more productive overseas than his away average suggests, whereas Gayle's numbers are flattered by the era and also not playing as deep into age.

Haynes having a better home record than Viv, Lloyd&Greenidge is also creditable while Gayle flopped badly on the only WI tracks that remained interesting during that period.
Not like theres a meaningful difference between Haynes’ record if you put him at Gayle’s age.

Maintaining his performance post-peak WI is a good thing. Playing longer wouldn't be notable if he was just a passenger.

I mean, Gayle had a 14.5 year career in tests and Haynes had a 16 year career. Don’t think longevity should be a big factor in this comparison.

That's fair enough. Haynes played very deep into age but Gayle started very early.
