When Northern Knights walked for a practice game at the RKC ground in Raipur, the birds chirped to their own tunes, there was a slight drizzle and a chill in the air that would have made for a perfect morning walk. The Knights were scheduled to play a practice game against the local side here, instead the players decided to have a crack at the nets.
Word spread like wild fire in the college campus about the presence of cricket stars in the vicinity and what followed over the next couple of hours was nothing short of crazy. A swarm of students marched towards the players’ dugout for autographs and pictures. Not surprisingly, selfies were the flavour of the season and the players more than obliged each one of them with a broad smile on their faces. “Hey Kane, can I click a selfie with you please?” shouted one of the girls from the crowd. “Sure, why not.” Kane replied. “He is so cute.” She told her friend, Kane Williamson had added another one to his fan list. A few of the students got autographs on their shirts. “That’s your school uniform for God’s sake,” one of them shouted. Well it doesn’t really matter.
It almost felt as if the students were given a day off to meet the stars of Northern Knights. The school bell rang at the backdrop but none cared, the teachers themselves were at the ground. Ish Sodhi, Scott Styris and Kane Williamson seemed to be crowd favourites but the rest of the lot were not left out either. Some players were amazed at the welcome they got and were more than willing to give the camera a second shot incase the first click failed.
There was no age that defined the crowd, students and teachers alike had become children all over again. The players then walked out on the field for a brief net session. All-rounder Scott Styris enthralled the audience with some huge hits as the crowd ran for cover. “WATCH IT”, he shouted to the crowd, a professor from the crowd held on to the catch and immersed himself in a loud clap from his students. He smiled, the crowd smiled and the Knights were well and truly the reason behind those beautiful faces.
