Cataloguing the best innings of X runs in test history

Xix2565

International Regular
Winner: Shardul Thakur vs England Oval 2021:
Botham smotham, this is how its done. Two clutch fifties and key wickets in both innings in an ATG all round display. The first innings knock is his sloggiest one ever but still has those trademark straight drives and no joke, probably the most brutal pull shot I've ever seen to get to his fifty. NSFW warning:

So NSFW that the video is unavailable on YT. As expected of the Lord.

58 runs:

Michael Holding vs India 1983: 6 wickets in the game and an innings that rescued West Indies from 114-7

George Hirst vs Australia, 1902: Got them in singles, etc. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...nd-vs-australia-5th-test-62469/full-scorecard)

Winner: Inzi vs Australia, Karachi 1994: Was considering putting Hirst as the winner here but then remembered Inzi was plumb lbw atleast twice here and wasnt given which is way funnier.

59 runs:
VVS Laxman vs Australia, 2001: Kind of a forgotten gem because of what he did later in the game. Have always said it should basically count as one ATG innings of 340 runs.

Damien Martyn vs SA, 1994: The fact that his admittedly kinda bad but not even that terrible shot in this game later on is still remembered and that he was apparently dropped for it for ages seems especially harsh when you look at the scorecard and realize he gave Australia a big first innings lead. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...vs-south-africa-2nd-test-63629/full-scorecard)

Winner: Ashley Giles vs Oval 2005: Warne getting out-dueled by the opposition spinner in a series decider as per usual (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...d-vs-australia-5th-test-218383/full-scorecard)

Yes in that he scored 56 while Botham scored 57; no in that he faced 75 balls while Botham faced 36.

The forgotten man of that innings is of course Chris Old, who (after Dilley was out) scored 29 off 32, while Botham was scoring 34 off 42 - so forgotten he wasn't even listed in the "great innings of 29" earlier in this thread :-(

60 runs:

-Mohinder Amarnath with his first in a long line of ballsy innings vs WI in a match where half his side was too scared to even come out to bat (only half joking) (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...indies-vs-india-4th-test-63162/full-scorecard)

-Wasim Bari's 133 run 10th wicket partnership with Raja (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ies-vs-pakistan-1st-test-63184/full-scorecard)

-Shardul Thakur's most recent ATG innings (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...land-vs-india-4th-test-1239546/full-scorecard)

and Allan Lamb's mad 47 ball assault vs NZ (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...land-vs-england-2nd-test-63572/full-scorecard) all pretty great.

The winner though is pretty uniquely awesome.

Kraigg Brathwaite vs Pak: He followed up his 142* in the first innings with an innings that finished off a chase which at one point was struggling at 67/5. He remains the only opener to remain not out in both innings of a test, according to a simple ass query I ran on cricinfo (might have ****ed it up someone pls check). (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...s-west-indies-3rd-test-1050233/full-scorecard). For both innings to actually be epic solo efforts instead of red ink not outs is neat.

Honourable mentions:

- Imran Khan's counterattack in one of Pak's greatest wins vs peak Windies. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...-vs-west-indies-1st-test-63441/full-scorecard) Nice short highlights on the PCB channel:

- Chris Cairns giving India KLPD (i.e. blueballs for non-desis) when it looked like a rare away win was on. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ealand-vs-india-2nd-test-63826/full-scorecard) . But hey atleast he was a great allrounder

unlike

- Robin Peterson. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...frica-vs-india-2nd-test-648667/full-scorecard).
Oh you've just got Kallis out and it looks like you could come back into this game. It'd be a shame if someone scored 61 in 52 and then took 4 wickets

Winner: Viv richards vs India 1983
This might be surpising to some but Viv wasn't actually one of the greatest batsmen ever because he's a pretty cool guy eh kills bowlers and doesnt afraid of anythign. It's actually because he averaged ~50 while also having the ability to make a 36 ball 61 to help his team chase 170 in 25 overs. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...indies-vs-india-1st-test-63335/full-scorecard)

I can't find a reference for it now, but I remember reading that Viv himself considered that to be one of his best and most satisfying innings. What a final session that must have been to watch.

It's a shame there's little to no footage of that tour. Would love to watch video of Amarnath's legendary efforts from that series too.

Holding, Roberts, Garner and Marshall in the bowling attack.:blink:

Not a terrible effort by India matching the Windies first innings score.

Honourable mentions:

- Two sticky pitch classics from Johnny Tyldesley (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-england-2nd-test-62474/full-scorecard) and Len Hutton (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-england-1st-test-62713/full-scorecard).

- Washington Sundar on debut walking in with India 6 down trailing by almost 200 and then casually spanking Cummins Hazelwood and Starc all around the gabba. Shame I can't technically post the gif of his hook off Cummins because it was in the second innings ( :( ) but special mention to the sassy no look six @1:45 .(https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-india-4th-test-1223872/full-scorecard)

Winner- Ken Mackay vs WI 1961:
This guy must have been one of most irritating players to ever come up against as a bowler . Loved blocking the hell out of the ball, came up with gritty back to the wall innings time and time again, barely played any shots (his cricinfo writeup literally describes his most productive shot as a shovelwhip to mid wicket) and had the most troll nickname on top of all that. Played many other important innings but this is is his most famous one in the legendary 60-61 series vs WI batting close to 4 hours to keep the series at 1-1 going into the final test. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...-vs-west-indies-4th-test-62891/full-scorecard)

Honourable mentions:

The final Bhuvi innings in this thread. Good night sweet prince. Two fifties in the game , the second rescuing India from what would've been an embarassing loss on one of the worst pitches of recent times. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...india-1st-investec-test-667711/full-scorecard)

- **** you Sam Curran :censored: (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...land-vs-india-1st-test-1119549/full-scorecard)

-Jadeja's series clinching innings vs Australia, 2017 (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...-vs-australia-4th-test-1062576/full-scorecard)

- Shane Warne's match turning partnership with Gilchrist in his 100th test. He'd follow it up by bowling 70(!) overs and being there at the end to finish off the runchase. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ca-vs-australia-2nd-test-63979/full-scorecard)

Winner:

Steve Waugh vs WI, 1995:

Ok so I'll start off by saying there's honestly a lot of bollocks talked about this innings by cricket writers/fans trying to go all Gideon Haigh. The idea that this innings is some sort of statement of intent that Australia "wouldn't back down" from the west indies and that it was some sort of huge turning point in the series is nonsense and I don't buy it thnxbye. Ambrose ran through Australia again in the second innings and Australia lost.

What it was was a display of grit and technique of the highest order on a pitch where the ball was doing this.

Honourable mentions:

- Navjot Sidhu spanking Warne in 1998: Ok, you know what, Sidhu is ridiculously overrated by a section of cricket fans, there I said it. Ranking him up there with Lara Sehwag Sachin as a batsman vs spin is a funny meme or so I thought, because some people actually believe it. Anyway enough Sidhu bashing, because this innings was actually pretty awesome. A statement of pure #intent vs Warne which set the stage for Sachin to hammer him into oblivion later on. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ia-vs-australia-1st-test-63794/full-scorecard)

- Wallis Mathias vs WI, 1959: The first non Muslim player to play for Pakistan was actually a bit of a cult hero despite completely unimpressive career stats. 3 fiftes in 21 tests sounds terrible but he's considered by many to be one of Pakistan's best fielders. And his career was littered with crucial little innings like this one where he made 64 and 45 in the lowest scoring test match since world war 1 (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...-vs-west-indies-2nd-test-62856/full-scorecard)

Winner- Graham Thorpe vs Pakistan, 2000 :
Thorpe's finest hour, and honestly Steve Bucknor's finest hour (for saying **** you to Moin's shameless time wasting and ensuring a result). A series winning knock where you guide the team home in a runchase vs Saqlain in complete darkness is hard to top. Deserves to rank high in a list of the best sub 100 innings.

65 runs:

Honourable mentions:

- Nathan Astle vs England Auckland 2002:
This one is probably forgotten because it was only couple of weeks after probably the most mind blowing assault in cricket history. It obviously doesn't quite match up to that but 65 in 51 balls with the game still in the balance helping you square the series probably makes it if not the better knock , definitely the more valuable knock. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...land-vs-england-3rd-test-63983/full-scorecard)

- AB de Villiers vs India, Capetown 2018: India bowled some absolute trash to him but it still takes a special batsman to score that freely on a nasty deck (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...rica-vs-india-1st-test-1122276/full-scorecard)

- Brad Haddin vs England , MCG 2013: If not for Johnson's overwhelming wrecking ball performances, this would've gone down as Haddin's ashes. Team was in trouble in literally every test when he came out to bat and every time he turned the game around. Not sure there's been another series performance like this from a lower order batsman on sheer clutch factor. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...lia-vs-england-4th-test-592400/full-scorecard)

Winner: Sachin Tendulkar vs Australia, Mumbai 2001: His second classic knock of the match. The two fifties he got here are among my favourite Sachin knocks for the purity of strokeplay against such a potent attack... those drives off Gillespie hnnnnggg. Needed some ATG bad luck to get him out too. (https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ia-vs-australia-1st-test-63919/full-scorecard)
