Both average very similar in tests and ODIs. Carl looked majestic when he scored. Ranatunga won matches and carried batting before Aravinda came good. Carl was unstoppable when in mood. Arjuna was not so invincible, but was frequently in the mood.

Who was better?

Cool Carl in tests I think. 13 test hundreds. Both good cricketers. Ranatunga good captain. Hooper was a handy bowler. Good fielder too by all accounts.

Hopper but pnly slightly. Arjuna a very good batsman. Both have averages that don’t reflect their quality / value.

First Class Debutant
Ranatunga. Held in the innings, fought it out, average does not reflect his quality. He also a handy middle order run scorer and in a crises too.

Hooper was also good and a handy bowler too.

I'll just give it to Arjun.

Hooper. And that's solely based on the fact that Hooper made runs home and away vs the Ws and has made runs away to McWarne. Don't think Arjuna quite matches that (imo).

At the very least the equal to Mark, possibly the greatest slip fielder I've seen and definitely in the top 3.

The best hands, contrary to Boycott's comments, a useful test bowler and one of the most effortlessly elegant batsmen I've seen.

Both are from very similar time periods playing almost the same attacks.

When Hooper was at the crease, I felt safe like a bodyguard taking care of me. I loved his calmness and brutality when it comes to bopping slow bowlers over their heads for sixes. The grace of Carl Llewelyn Hooper is magnificent.

Between Arjuna and him, I would choose him to bat for my life*

*-That's if he doesn't do an Oberyn 'Red Viper' Martell

That innings against Wasim and Waqar in 1993 still give me chills. The sound of the bat and calmness was so good to watch.

Voted Ranatunga, but thinking about it, I probably only have that impression cos he was a standout bat in his team. Tough to seperate them.
