Don't really care whether this Mithun guy bowls really quick or not.... but one thing i do care about is the selectors picking him to play International cricket too early just like Ishant was chosen too early in his career and than dropped.
Hopefully this young lad is allowed full time to develop him game at dometic level and if he continues to succeed after couple of seasons than give him a chance at international level.
I'm excited about Manish Pandey too.. hopefully he does well.. There's alot of batting talent to be excited about. I haven't seen all of them bat but Mukund, Pujara, Rahne and of course Rohit Sharma, Kohli and Raina.

They can, at best, pick up someone who is taking a bagful of wickets and use scientific methods to increase that bowler's pace. He's doing a good job, so just make him better. Ranadeb Bose gets wickets aplenty, so pick him and work to make him better, rather than cast him aside for the faster but wayward Dinda- not the absolute, but an example.

thanks for the response friends. hope more friends join this unglamorous but pertinent topic of indian domestic cricket scene. We are not here to unearth any talents as we are incapable of that through this forum, but at least we could bring to the notice of avid cricket lovers some genuine domestic talents. Manee bhai, don't blame sreesanth for his no show in the first match of the season as that particular wicket was dead and as simple as that evidence of that; For the entire match, the wicket column tally of medium pacers both sides included = 1. Even the great Mcgrath would have struggled to take a wicket there. The talassery cricket pitch has been that like for years and sadly as usual the authorities are least bothered about it. . After the match sreesanth was seen flashing a comment on TV that "great that we don't get to play another match in this ground". Imagine the situation where he feels something of blessing not to play a match in a home ground.
For Mithun, not for a second i was advocating him to be immediately drafted into the Indian side. Let him go through the hard grind of domestic cricket and come out successful. But definitely there is an air of excitement about him.
The comment on Ishant needs a correction. Actually in his case if you observe carefully, it makes an interesting study. His growth as well a decline as a fast bowler has been when he has been with the Indian team. First, when he was selected for England tour he was hardly bowling above 135kmph and was just about sharp. But then a sudden and surprising transformation came about during a short time between that tour and the Australian tour and during this period he hardly played any domestic cricket. By the end of that australian tour he was bowling consistently in the 145kmph range. This clearly means that the time spend with the Indian team was well spend for him. His decline started with the onset of the first IPL and it has been a gradual and steady one. To me without being too analytical the simple reason for his decline has been the loss of that in cutter or inswinger whatever it is. With the inswinger gone he has been like a fighter with no weapon in his armoury. when he had that potent inswinger, the ball that straightened a bit was too much for any a batsman.

The case of Ranadeb bose has to be one of the most unfortunate ones in indian cricket. Come on selectors, just give him one match he cant bowl more worse than 0-73, 0-63 etc etc that what we are seeing these day from our frontline pacers. And there is a bonus too. he never ever bowls a no ball. it seems he has never ever bowled a no ball in first class cricket. Believe me he does something with the new ball no doubt about that.

Strange are the ways of the state selection committees all over India. Examples of Some myopic selection policies at the start of this season.
Punjab:
Chandan Madan the exciting and dashing wk batsman being ignored for the first match of the Ranji trophy. The men being preferred are the 36 or 37 something Pankaj dharmani / ankur thakur etc. In what should have been a break through year for him he is now left pondering his future in the sidelines. In fact the punjab selectors have always been erratic and inconsistent in their handling of this prodigiously talented cricketer right from his junior days. A consistent run in the side is what he deserves at this stage of his career.
Sushant Marathe :
This guy has to play for Mumbai. this opening batsman has it in him to graduate to the next level. possessing a keen eye and strokes all round the wicket he started well for mumbai in the pre season warmup tournaments where he was their highest and consistent run getter down south of india. But come first match he has been ignored being unable to force through the top heavy mumbai batting line up. Eventhough sahil kukreja (looks a very limited player fit just for the domestic grind) scored 95 in the season opener, for sheer talent or potential he is well ahead of him and rahane (an over rated player in my opinion)

Another topic to be discussed here; The selection of board presidents eleven team to play against sri lanka. I am absolutely flabbergasted seeing the team chart. It is a bunch of international no hoppers. Tried and tried and tried and tired poor souls they are really. What is there to be seen of guys like A nayyar, a dinda, pankaj singh, pradeep sangwan etc. i am really at a loss for words friends. If according to srikanth and company, pradeep sangwan and ashok dinda are the next great pace bowling hopes and abishek nayar the great allround hope then God save us crazy indian cricket fans. It defies common sense why the selectors always pick the squads well in advance. In this case they could have waited for the first round of ranji matches to finish for their holy selection process and could have got a form indicator of the players. Players like B kumar of up must be wondering what they have done wrong. this kumar is the only decent medium pace bowling allrounder available in domestic circuit other than agarkar to say the least. Are the selectors watching these ranji road show all over the country.

Yes, let's look at the squad.
Rohit, Mukund, Rahane, Tiwary have good domestic records, so they can be allowed. Rohit took a while to get to grips with FC cricket but his last season was good and they obviously regard him as a long term prospect. Uthappa may be seen as questionable, but his last season was pretty solid. Have not seen Saha keep, but his batting average is 36.53 in FC cricket which is good and he averaged 42.13 last year. Conclusion is that the batting is okay, they want to go in with young promising talent and they have done that. Not too sure why Jaggi is there, considering he has only done well in the OD format, not the FC format.
Piyush Chawla is a good, long term prospect, but in his last two seasons in India, he has averaged over 30 with the ball. However, I guess we can allow his conclusion on the basis of his tremendous stint for Sussex with bat and ball. Pragyan Ojha is a good bowler too, no problems with his inclusion. Dhawal Kulkarni had a good breakthrough season and so he can stay in too. However, I am a bit worried by Ashok Dinda's inclusion, he has been favoured due to his pace and therefore picked off just the one season in the Plate League, a season which Ranadeb Bose matched him in, not to mention that Bose has had many superb seasons before that.
Nayar should be nowhere near international cricket, imo, as he is a bits and pieces player. Pradeep Sangwan has not built on his first FC season and averaged 39.41 last year, so God knows why he is there. Pankaj Singh is obviously favoured by the selectors due to his height and he did take 11 wickets in his last game, but again, he averaged 31.78 last season, simply not good enough.

Let me dissect the Board Presidents xi a little further and add my take on it.
Among the BP XI save one or two there is hardly any player in whom I could see that X factor or the oomph factor whatever they call it or someone who could be termed as a long term prospect.
1.RobinUthappa (still have some belief left in him, for ODI especially)
2. Abhinav Mukund (From what I have seen, I am not convinced of him seems to be a Flat track bully(FB) only)
3. Ajinkya Rahane (as mentioned earlier not entirely convincing an FB might be)
4. Rohit Sharma (capt) (erratic Selection process, himself, IPL all contributing to the decline of what should have been the next great talent in India. What a pity)
5. Manoj Tiwary( Lacks that X factor. Not convinced of his international credentials)
6. Abhishek Nayar ( Already stated)
7. Wriddhiman Saha (wk) (Nothing special about him in order to replace Dinesh Kartik in the pecking order)
8. Piyush Chawla (Didn’t see much improvement in his bowling during the challengers trophy. Still profligate and that ripping leg break still a distant dream.
9. Pragyan Ojha (Easily the best left arm spinner in India. How dearly India missed his wicket taking ability in the middle overs during the Australia series. Should have been the first choice spinner ahead of Harbajan singh in the ODI’s. Cant remember hardly a single match he has disappointed when given a chance. Whereas there has been disappointments only from Harbajan)
10. Ashok Dinda (nothing more to add)
11. Dhawal Kulkarni (Don’t see him going far. Could churn out overs after overs in domestic circles and be always there in the fringes. His physique is a limitation)
Note the comment of Srikkanth while selecting the team "We have made a conscious decision to make sure that we have given lot of opportunities to everybody; lot of new faces, new comers, and some cricketers who have been around but are now out, to redeem themselves," Kris Srikkanth, India's chairman of selectors, said. "We are trying to get new faces. People who we have seen or are absolute certainties, we didn't want to pick. We wanted everybody to prove themselves, that's the idea of the Board President's XI." . This statement of his is a contradiction of sorts. Who are the absolute certainties outside this X1 he is talking about. Were are the new comers in this side not a single one in fact. All these guys have been forming the core of India A sides/ BP XI,s etc for some time now. And after yet again picking up the same set of guys he is making such a statement. If he wanted to observe some new and fresh faces there are a number of guys who caught the eye last year. I have always felt that the selection of bright young talents just going by cold statistics has been non productive over the years and damaging to some real talents. Over the years what we have been seeing from our selectors time and again is that they just depend on the bloated averages in the domestic competitions which is never a true indicator of a players talent. There have been only rare instances of a selector be it a state or national selector spotting a genuine talent without relying on averages or figures. one example of that is Sudeep tyagi being selected to the UP side. (foresight of M Kaif). Let me list a few players who could have been tried out in some positions.
Rahul Dewan of Haryana (opening batsman). compact solid opener with good strokes. had a good season last year and has again started of well this season. Delhis loss Haryanas gain it seems.
Arun Kartik of Tamil Nadu (opening bat.) Highly regarded in domestic circles. he has already made a name himself as a dashing opener. has a wide a array of strokes and compact too and after the first season has a plus 50 average. If he curbs his instincts a bit more, could be more devastating. Would love to see this guy lining up against much sterner bowling attacks than what we have in the domestic set up. Keep note of this guy. this might be the breakthrough year for him.
S. Suresh kumar of Tamil Nadu. (Middle order bat and more than useful offspinner). This lad is a natural talent who if handled properly and given the right chances would go very far. Again highly regarded in the domestic circles, this short statured batsman is such a clean striker of the ball and with a good temperament to boot, which was evident in that innings of 87 in the challenger trophy this year. Already a member of CSK in IPL his off spin is often under rated but has proven to be highly effective when given a chance. My instinct tells me that this lad has something in him that can take him very far.
There are others too whom i find exciting or worth a watch when I scourge through the domestic circles. More of it later friends as works constraints limits me here.

I guess what Srikkanth meant was that guys like Pujara, Badrinath and Vijay are seen as absolute certainities as the fringe players in an INdian test squad and they ve given a chance to the others.
Not the most convincing but if the idea is to give another chance to guys who have been there and failed and to complete newcomers, the side is ok. Perhaps Kaif could have been there but then again, his domestic form has not set the world on fire, has it?

That's the best you can make of this. Rohit Sharma can use this to return to form, and maybe that will see him back in the ODI squad- he's a very talented player, a smart batsman who builds partnerships and a very sharp fielder. Nayar, Chawla and Saha as all-rounders are good picks, but they could use a few more. I have seen Nayar on television, and he's a much better bowler than the captain rates him to be. Chawla has had a bad start to this season, but a good game here can help a lot.Manee said:
While none of Uthappa, Rahane and Mukund are in the hunt for a place even on the India bench, they're good enough for this team. The top six-and-a-half is quite solid, but nine to eleven is weak. Flimsy. There's nothing they can gain with Kulkarni or Dinda, as they're just average and don't contribute anything.

Here's an update from one match- Baroda are at 73/3 at lunch against Bengal. Dinda is unavailable as he's in the Board XI, and wickets are shared by Saurav Sarkar (2) and Laxmiratan Shukla (1). Baroda's 'chuckers' Veragi and Pawar are out of the game.

TN vs Gujarat is on right now. The pitch is flat, with little carry. Parthiv Patel scored a very slow but dogged century, and is on 122 off 224 deliveries. Also in the runs was Bhavik Thakker, with 72. The TN bowling has been largely unimpressive, and Ashwin, the offie, bowled a mammoth 30 overs, without a wicket. Newcomer Aushik Shrinivas took two crucial wickets and has looked good on his Ranji debut, but the seamers were slow and relied a lot on movement- which wasn't enough on this deck.

I had thought of stepping out to watch the Mumbai/Orissa match, but had some assignments to finish. Given a choice between being one of a crowd and struggling to catch a glimpse of the ODI teams at a Vashi hotel and then shooed off by police, and walking in free to watch a domestic game and see some players up close at Brabourne, I'd take the latter. However, those assignments as well as a light rain kept me at home, and I thought there would be little cricketing action today. And I was right- no play at Mumbai today.
Stumps at Motera, and Gujarat are at 271/5. Shrinivas and Ganapathy got two wickets each, while veteran Balaji got one. It was a very dull performance, except for steady innings by Patel and Thakker, but the pitch was slow, lacked carry and wasn't conducive for free-flowing strokes. The TN fielding was uncharacteristically sloppy, as they missed a few fence-bound balls and dropped a few.

In the 2007-08 season in India, he averaged over 58 and in the 2008-09 season, a shade over 50. He's had a sloppy start to this season, but otherwise, he's been impressive in the last few seasons. His List-A form, though, has been quite bad, as he struggled to score over 20 in the last two seasons, although most list-A figures in India should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Here's a wrap of what happened in the Super League and the Plate League today. Parthiv completed his 150 but there was little support. The TN fielding was still sub-par, while Balaji finished well to claim four. When the TN batsmen started, they scored at a very Australian, very ODI-ish run rate over five. An interesting phase was when Timil Patel kept bowling to Arun Karthik repeatedly way outside leg- on one instance, Arun stood way out towards leg and then walked back, turned around and pulled behind the keeper for four, almost knocking Parthiv Patel down!
