I won't defend Bucknor at present, as clearly he needs to be dropped from the International Panel immediately.

But I agree with Richard that he had actually umpired to a pretty good standard through the last couple of years. I certainly remember that there was a thread or two (and plenty of comments in the "official thread") as to his consistently high level umpiring during the last Ashes series.
Thanks. And :notworthy welcome back (I know I'm later than most, but nonetheless, we've been bemoaning your absence for months and months and months).

It's a terrible, terrible shame now that Bucknor did indeed go on after the World Cup. Because whatever happens for the rest of his career - whether he has another few good games, whether he retires tomorrow - his reputation will forever be tarnished by this match. What's more, there'll always be the thought that one Umpire's failure to retire has cost a team a Test-match.

It's such a shame for a man who was for many years a more than competant Umpire.

I guess it'd probably be best for everyone if he were to retire very soon. But I've rarely wished so badly that someone had retired at an earlier date. :(

in would rather Bucknor umpiring than some moron like Billy Bowden....

Taufel is by far the best umpire in the world, absolutely no doubt about it, and the guy cant umpire in Australia!!!

What a joke, hes got to umpire bloody joke SA vs WI matches where noone shows up.

Watch the Aus vs India series then watch the SA vs WI series, its like a completely different event.

Commentators in SA are so dull when they actually say something. Or they just read out text messages on air where someone is wondering why a batsman isnt given out when a ball is pitching a metre outside leg
Oh shut up troll

It seems Ponting's doing the umpiring now so can't see why we shouldn't have his mum at the other end.
LOL!

I did like the little "stick your finger up" routine from Ponting to Benson.

I don't think we need umpires anymore, just get the fielding captain to tell the batsman when he's out. We'll never see any draws, will be awesome.

Rubbish. Bucknor, as I said, was poor between 2002 and 2004\05. He has been roundly good - not faultless, as no-one is, but good - since 2005. He's just made an error yesterday. He's at an age when he probably should retire, else he might go into terminal decline.

But the way people have reacted to this sole decision - if there've been so many, why has there been no threads of this nature for the past year? I haven't watched every Bucknor Test, but nor do I need to - a match report can easily sum-up who's made errors. I've barely watched Daryl Harper in the last 5 years, but I still know he's absolutely awful. Far worse, I dare say, than Bucknor has ever been.
Okay Richard, we will ammend the statement to incorporate your 'amendments' ....

Bucknor is an awful awful umpire but he is not consistent
:)

Heh, Harps might not be the best umpire around, but his howlers tend to be generally consistent no matter which game he's umpiring in. It's all I ask really.

In what way? He gives more bad decisions against certain teams?

Doubt it.

Bucknor is far from an awful Umpire - had an absolute horror game at The SCG, that's it. It's mad to suggest he's an awful Umpire, or ever was (except perhaps between 2002 and 2004\05).

Even if Bucknor did have some form of bias against Team X, he'd still be a perfectly good Umpire in games not involving said team.

Bucknor DONE!!

Seriously, this deaf, old, hagger, has been umpire is FINISHED!! he makes poor decision after poor decision and today was clear indication he should be taken off the ICC elite panel.
Well... no, not really.

Guess those who thought SCG 2007/08 was just an aberration might've got it right, after his (along with Hair's) excellent performance in the Trent Bridge 2008 match.

Bucknor is a very good umpire except when its India-then he becomes an amateur who clearly brings his prejudices against a team into the making the decisions and that can be devastatingly bad for India as we have seen again and again.............

Debatable whether he brings his prejudices into decision-making (or indeed if he even has any) but he's hardly been sensible in some of his mannerisms, and has given Indians far-from-far-fetched reasons to be suspicious of him.
