The thing that you have to remember with ice hockey, american football etc. is that they're SQUAD games - it's not the same team playing 60 minutes of ice hockey, they bring out different lines and specialist teams for power plays etc. and only the goaltenders are gonna stay on throughout. Also you don't actually get that many fights - mostly they're confined to meaningless games and rivalries.C_C said:
talking **** here mate...even a small running back in the NFL weighs 15 stone which is pure muscle....and he would be expected to run a 40 yard dash in about 4.2 seconds max...there is a Quarterback in the NFL (Daunte Culpepper) who is about 6ft 5 and about 17 stone, and is about the perfect specimen for playing a high impact sport with the abilty to run fast ..he can do 40 yards in about 4.2 seconds as well...even some of the 300lb plus players who play on the lines can run 40 in 4.7 (we are talking a guy well over 20 stone running the eqivalent of 100m sprint in say 12 seconds).. that amount of momentum and kinetic engery, on impact with a rugby player, of any code, would probably severly injure. ..also a wide receiver is quite often left out hanging waiting not only for the ball to get to him (he will be for the last few seconds of the play looking towards the ball)..as soon as he gets the ball, he is fair game for a 250lb (running extremely fast linebacker) to flatten him...the WR doesnt know when or from whereabouts quite often..some of that stuff a rugby player just wouldnt cope with physicallyRichard Rash said:

Yeah, I think it refers more to an attitude of cautiousness that is present than to the people themselves for the most part. The cricket team have gone some way to changing that in their ranks - whereas previously it was noted that they seemed to play not to lose rather than to try and win, with a draw being a happy medium. From a personal point of view, I can't think of too many British sportspeople that I've watched throwing caution to the wind and just going for it, there's a more reserved attitude in the population as a whole and I think this is reflected in the attitudes we see on the sporting field - which stands to reason.SpaceMonkey said:
