Relative to era, it wasn't super hard. And no, I am NOT going to overlook Simpson's middle order stint.
How many other openers averaged over 50 post war?

Far less a leg spinning one who may very well have been the greatest slip ever?

Being such unique one of one player alone gets you bonus points.

He averaged 46. Among openers post WWII, I will keep Gavaskar, Boycott and Greenidge much ahead; and all of G Smith, Hayden, Sehwag, Lawry, Cook, Gooch and Morris on around equal footing to Simpson. His legbreaks were great and him being an ATG in the cordon as well is a big boost. That's why I am very much on line about this one. Will probably go with Simpson today, may switch to Statham tomorrow. But on the primary, Statham is ahead for me. He ranks higher among my bowler's list (38) than Simpson does for batting (56).

If I may ask, where does Gooch rank in that list?:)

I actually rate gooch in my top 50, or even 45 maybe.
(Because of his late peak which I rate very highly and obviously, his mustache)
He was not that great for most of his career and for all his bravados against pace, really struggled in Australia.

Mustache is a fair point in his favour.

Gooch averaged 50 for ten years straight. If Greenidge can be rated highly because of averaging 51 for 11 years, even after having a Greenidgesque downfall later, then why not Gooch? Greenidge also averages 30.96 against AUS. Also having less not out's also harms his average, otherwise has a pretty good RPM (75.42)
(Guess away record also has a role)

Strongest point actually.

Gooch averages 42 overall instead of Greenidge's 45; presenting a much worse period of run before those 10 years.

Didn’t Gooch miss like 3 of those years? Not quite the same as actually playing for 10 years.

Yeah. But Greenidge has 19 not out's, where Gooch has only 6. Greenidge has RPI of 40.85, where Gooch has a RPI of 41.4. Pretty even imo. (I don't rate Greenidge below Gooch, but you get my point)

Fifty six? Fifty six?! Oh man now that’s all I can think about. I’m gonna kill you, you no good fifty sixing…

Well I have the likes of Shrewsbury ahead; don't think most do. Remove all of Grace, Ranji, Barry, etc. making it Test only; and I think Simpson cuts top 50.

Simpson averages 55.52 as an opener, in 70 innings. Don't think many would be able to do that in any era of test cricket.
Also scored 3 double centuries as an opener, which has a 311 at Old Trafford.
