Yeah he pretty much performed at the level of a good batting all-rounder in the tests he did play (kinda Stokes-y tbh), although I think there was always a nagging feeling he wouldn’t have continued to be an effective bowler if he’d had a fully fleshed-out test career. Maybe though, he would’ve just continued to be good in seaming New Zealand-y conditions.Averaged 37 with the bat and 19 with the ball in home Tests. You definitely take that. Was useless as a Test bowler away from home though.
Overall, considering his ODI bowling and his test batting in particular, you couldn’t really call him bits and pieces in either.
