Biggest six hitters outside the subcontinent

Another one people won't think much of is Tresco (he's not the biggest hitter obviously), when he puts his considerable belly behind it. Against Pakistan in the ODI series a couple of years back he hit a missile which was almost still rising when it hit the 3rd floor of the stand. Mark Nicholas started squeaking as per usual and one of the other commentators (I think) said he'd not seen anything like it since Lance Cairns was about.
Tresco sure can give it a wallop. In his first ever Twenty20 game, which I saw at Taunton, he hit Carl Greenidge for six fours in an over, and each of them was an absolute bullet. It's all well and good judging the strength of a hit by how far it goes over the ropes, but when it comes to hitting the hardest fours, Tresco's right up there with Zulu in the "swing right through the line with a monstrously heavy bat and equally monstrous shoulders" stakes.

Chris Cairns' father Lance could hit further than Chris. He hit 6 sixes in an over once and also hit a one handed six
Yeah right......Hogg, Lillee and Mclean all bowled the same over did they 8-)

It wasn't off one over fella ....thats never been done before in an ODI.

He did hit one one-handed though over deep square leg's head

The biggest i've seen was Cairnes's last year when it went out of the stadium. It was high and went so far. Ponting hits quite a few sixes, but they don't go the distance of those by Lee, Afridi or Gilly

Afridi's six off Symonds at the WACA is by far the biggest hit i've ever seen. The WACA is a big big ground , and to hit the pavillion as high as he did, the ball was probably still rising at the time

Yikes, Brett doesn't just hit the long ball, he's cricket's Happy Gilmore! :-O

Just watched Trent Bridge Aus 1st innings, he easily clears the top of one the stands which is HUGE. And it was off Harmison! :D

I really want to see this Lee strike, sounds monumental. Think going downtown Zulu was the most fearful striking I've seen, four or six it was going to smoke you in the crowd. :D
To me, Klusener never looked like hitting a six though. Yes, he's a big strong guy and whatnot, but he was such an ugly six hitter that he never really looked threatening, apart from the fact that you knew he could clobber it.

I'd probably argue that and say that better six hitters come from other parts of the world than the sub-continent...
How exactly do you mean better? The sub-continent has produced more big-hitters in the world. Here is a list of the top 10 cricketers with the most career sixes.

Shahid Afridi
ST Jayasuriya
SC Ganguly
SR Tendulkar
CL Cairns
Inzamam-ul-Haq
IVA Richards
Wasim Akram
BC Lara
AC Gilchrist

Quantity does not equate quality though. There are a lot of ugly sixes on the subcontinent.

Thats why I asked him to explain what he meant. I actually never watched most of the people he mentioned, so I can't comment.

Be interesting to see number of games and 6s per match for those (and others not in that list)

That has more to do with the ridiculous number of ODIs played by subcontinent nations during the 90s than anything else.

Here's the top 10 list in tests:
CL Cairns
AC Gilchrist
IVA Richards
BC Lara
ML Hayden
CH Lloyd
IT Botham
CG Greenidge
A Flintoff
CL Hooper

Reading this thread it reminded me of the New Zealand v Australia test at the Basin Reserve last summer where Gilchrist took to Vettori and hit him straight into the members area. I have the photo to prove it too :D

Cairns and Gilchrist would go down as the biggest six hitters for me with Richard Petrie the biggest in NZ domestic cricket.

Yeah exactly.. lots of spinners bowling and the grounds are signifigantly smaller. that's the reason if any that you see alot more sixes..

if you are a stongish player that you won't even have to time the ball that well to get a six half the time.

The first big six I remember was from 2003/4, whenver it was that the West Indies were in South Africa. (Same time as India were in Australia I think, around then anyway.)

I just remember Merv Dillion coming out to bat in one of the ODI's and launching I *think* Andre Nel straight out of the ground and into the road. It's always more fun when tailenders are the ones belting the ball out of the ground. And Brett Lee hit some beauties in the Ashes.

Its amazing when you look at Afridi and Flintoff's 6 per innings stats. That's unbelievable.

Mine are two seperate lists and to be honest i didn't bother to work them out..

However it';s very clear why the players you mentioned have more than others.. It's just weight of matches and the small grounds they play on.. Tendulkar for instance has alot but both he and Inzy still average slightly less sixes per match than Kallis and Ponting who haven't played as many matches.
