Look - Smith is no great shakes as a camptain -rather average. And to be honest, who else was there for captaincy ? Kallis didnt want it and they chopped Pollock and Gibbs has a spotty disciplinary record.
He still has ways to go before he matures - not everyone is a Sachin Tendulkar, ie, very very few people are mature beyond their years at that age.
I was referring to everything that he has to cope with off the field. The South Africa job must as difficult in that respect as any in international cricket. Shane Warne would be a fantastic onfield captain, but I doubt many would suggest that he is the model of someone who has reached full maturity.

I'm a huge Graeme Smith even when people like Marc and Neil were saying he wasn't as good as he is hyped out to be (and before you say so, yes I can remember the reason why), it is one thing to be a sort of person is that you shouldn't go having a cry in the media.

If you are going to dish it then you must like it. That is the one flaw about him (although his missus is not bad at all).
It wasn't G Smith LBW Hoggard by any chance was it? ;)

If they are they usually get picked in the Pakistani and Bangladeshi Test teams.

As for Kallis, he never seemed like captaincy material to me anyway.

Why hasn't Murali ever captained?

(Nice thread hi-jack, there!)
I am surprised by that too. Whatever little he did when he captained the Asian eleven in the Afro Asian cup, I thought he was of the Warne variety. Potentially very good captains who never got their chance for some strange reasons. (although it is not that strange with Warne)

The problem with that is it is impossible to pick even 12 months in advance with any real degree of certainty.
Yeah which is why prediction based on international first class cricketers is done.

(Nice thread. Hi there, Jack!)

Has Murali ever vice-captained? I think the Sri Lankan authorities are probably a bit wary of over-burdening him (given the amount of responsibility he carries already) and increasing the amount of media scrutiny he is subjected to. He would be a good vice-captain though, even in an unofficial capacity (a la Warne...).

At 20 years old, Alastair Cook is definitely up there. By the time he is 25 he will be in the test team and doing very nicely thank you very much.

The other one I've thought of in the mean time is that it can be very hard to captain while bowling, and seeing that Murali bowls so many of his side's overs, it'd make the job even more difficult.

The best young batsman, I reckon, is Mohammed Ashraful. A 100 against Australia at 20 is very little worth sneezing at.

If only he could be more consistent...

Bangladesh have alot of good young talent in their side now, with Aftab Ahmed, Mohammed Ashraful and Sharihar Nafees.

Indeed, Mohammad Ashraful deserves mention - he is pretty talented and even though he has a helluva long way to go, he is one to watch for the future.

That they do, and I think in 3 or 4 years time they could be quite competitive because of tyhe exposure that they're getting and the talent they're undoubtedly beginning to show in patches.

Clarke is talented for one.
Why is he perceived so talented?
That he is young, pretty-faced and plays lots of strokes.
It sure ain't because he scores lots of runs.

I think it applies to Sarwan and Smith - i am not 100% sure but i think they are 22-23 year olds.....pretty young IMO and not extremely experienced either.
On the day of this post Sarwan was 25 years 105 days old.
And he's been playing for 6 years already!

No-one would claim Smith to be an especially good captain. But is it not fairly obvious that he is, at the least, not a bad man for the job?
Incidentally, there are rather more reasons not to give Hersch the captaincy than his disciplinary record.
