This is a topic I have been wondering about recently. I think it's quite close between the three of them tbh.

Barry is rated along with the likes of Richards, Sobers, Lara and Tendulkar.

Graeme is comparable to Hayden and probably above Sehwag.

This isn't remotely close.

If the openers were to be rated as purely cricketers, I'd say
Barry>(>)Barlow>Goddard>Mitchell>Smith.

I'm sure many see it as a meme or joke, but Barry was an upper top tier level batsman. He was simply brilliant.

If the aliens are landing tomorrow and we are in the time machine collecting players to play for earth, he's one of the first and easiest picks.

He also is part of the link of best batsmen in the world from Hobbs to Smith.

Was Barry unanimously rated ahead of Gavaskar?

In the 70's?

Yes.

For the first 5 years of the 70's until Viv exploded into the scene, he was seen as the best batsman in the world. Period.

That's Chappell, Gavaskar and back end of career Sobers.

I'm sure you've read me saying this but Lille rates him with Sobers and Viv, Procter rates him with Sobers as the best he's seen, him ahead though. There's an entire list of names.

Even Bradman called him the best opener he'd seen. That included Sunny and Hutton.

People on this sub are hesitant to call Bumrah as an all time great despite picking 200+ Test wickets at an average of 19.4

The same people are okay with calling Barry Richards who played 4 Tests a better batsman than the guy who once held the record for most runs and most centuries and has multiple centuries against Roberts, Holding, Garner, Marshall, Imran, Hadlee, Willis, Thomson & Botham.

Barry Richards
4 Tests. 7 innings. 508 runs @ 72.57. 2 centuries.

Sunil Gavaskar’s first 4 Tests
4 Tests. 8 innings. 774 runs @ 154. 4 centuries.

I didn't get angry. I just said that the thread might not be asking this purely based on tests.

I apologize if I've caused any trouble.
Just joking man.

Hutton played in the toughest batting era.
Sunny took on the greatest fastest bowlers.

I am not comfortable when people are rating a guy who played 4 Tests over these two legends.
