Would you have him over Jayasuriya? Hard to choose between them.Gilchrist is a game breaker. A must have in a side that has its other bases covered.

Nothing shallow. You don't have as many great batsmen that bat at no. 7 as you have in the opening slot. A wicket-keeper batsman is therefore easier to slot in as a no. 7 than an opener. You could say the same for any position. That is a shallow argument.
But Gilchrist did play some outstanding knocks at 7 early on in his career didn;t he???? After all he did play at 6 or 7 in test matches. He could easily adapt IMO.Nothing shallow. Consider Gilchrist in Tests. If he was an opener and finished with same average and SR, would it be as easy for him to replace Hobbs/Hutton/Gavaskar in an AT XI, and thus be a certain selection?
Yeah, possibly. That's not a shallow argument eitherBut Gilchrist did play some outstanding knocks at 7 early on in his career didn;t he???? After all he did play at 6 or 7 in test matches. He could easily adapt IMO.

That is what I mean, he was an opener in the early to mid 90s (91 to 94, I think) and it is pretty obvious that his SR was pretty much slightly higher than par for course when you compare to openers of that time.Awta but my point was that still the s/r was nothing to write home about for an opener (lower 70's). Was replying to sree's point of 'taking advantage of field restrictions'
Would always choose him ahead of Jayasuriya as a batsman, but would be doubtful if I'd choose either in an all time XIWould you have him over Jayasuriya? Hard to choose between them.
I would take Lara,Tendulkar, Richards and Ponting as my top 4 in ODIs, in that order, just for the sheer awesomeness of it..I really don't know if you lose that much with Gilchrist. Next to Tendulkar, it's not a bad tactic to have an explosive guy next to him; obviously Tendy can do that, but it takes the pressure off him and lets him set himself to bat through the innings. It's worked well with Sehwag in recent times.
I think Gilchrist is probably as good (not necessarily better) as anyone else in that role - thinking about guys like Jayasuriya, Sehwag, etc. It can also allow me to play someone like Kapil Dev/Lance Klusner at 7 in my line-up, which might be harder to do if I included Dhoni in the side; would have to bat Dhoni at 6, which wouldn't be the worst thing, obviously. I just think that my side looks better balanced with Gilly opening.
You don't think much of Zaheer Abbas and Dean Jones? They were specialist, innovative ODI batsman. I will have them over Ponting.I would take Lara,Tendulkar, Richards and Ponting as my top 4 in ODIs, in that order, just for the sheer awesomeness of it..
I'd rather have Ponting tbh. If an Abbas/Jones type batsman was required, Dhoni's a better option IMO. Brings more to the table. You don't think much of Zaheer Abbas and Dean Jones? They were specialist, innovative ODI batsman. I will have them over Ponting.
Dhoni does bring a lot to the table but has tough competition from gilly.I'd rather have Ponting tbh. If an Abbas/Jones type batsman was required, Dhoni's a better option IMO. Brings more to the table.
Not that surprising, did well to get one vote to be honest. Not that I don't rate him, just that I suspect there's a fair amount of tactical voting among the three obvious picks. One solitary vote for Dean Jones is surprising IMHO
Not that I voted for him, obv
Haha. Insane line up. How good would that be to watch?I would take Lara,Tendulkar, Richards and Ponting as my top 4 in ODIs, in that order, just for the sheer awesomeness of it..
And I would want them to face up to McGrath, Garner, Akram, and Murali........woah......so who's gonna get the upper hand????Haha. Insane line up. How good would that be to watch?
maybe if this pole was put together in the mid ninties... he probably would have done very well, dean jones was probably one of the examples of how to play an odi inn that others built upon. Not that surprising, did well to get one vote to be honest.
