Best all time XI for each country

I havn't read too much about Reid - did he have a bad start to his career or something (just looking at his average)
He changed his technique to a much more effective back foot technique after New Zealand got a real working over from Adcock in South Africa in 1953-54 and after that he was often the only or possibly one of the only two good batsman in the side which meant he was often more agressive than necessary in an attempt to boost the confidence of the other batsman. He himself estimates he'd have averaged 50 in the 1980's team.

Depends on which Reid you're talking about. I think JR Reid was supposed to be one of the best batting allrounders NZ have had.

Whatever it takes!!!
But this is a test side that we are looking at and we are looking at a better keeper. Latif was definitely better as a keeper.

This is a gun team. Few teams would have as strong a bowling attack. The batting though might not be as strong as one would like. But a bowling attack capable of ripping through almost any batting line-up.
why not leave out Fazal and get in a proper batter at 6? Younis Khan or Mo Yo won't exactly be out of place there, would they?

I think they would be. And I would like Pakistan to play to their strength which is bowling. Latif and Akram together make up one batsman and Imran another. So the real genuine tailenders that we do have are Waqar, Qadir, and Fazal. However the firepower in the bowling is fit for almost all conditions.

MoYo and YK are not that great and quite suspect on lively pitches. They are the first ones who come to mind when we talk about the era of flat pitches and how batsman have taken advantage of them.

I think a few in the current test team will make a claim to be in their by the time their careers are over. Williamson, Taylor, Ryder and McCullum will put their hands up i think.

1.G.Turner - 40
2.B.McCullum (wk) - 40
3.K.Williamson - late 40s
4.M.Crowe - 45
5.R.Taylor - 45
6.J.Ryder - late 40s
7.C.Cairns - 35 + 29
8.D.Vettori - 30 + 30
9.R.Hadlee - 25 + 25
10.S.Bond - 25
11.J.Cowie - 25

I think players like Dempster, Donnelly are unfair to compare with players with a much larger match base as seen with the likes of Mike Hussey and his declining average over time. They would be in my second X1 though 8-)

1.S.Dempster
2.M.Richardson
3.B.Sutcliffe
4.S.Fleming (c)
5.N.Astle
6.J.R.Reid
7.J.Oram
8.B.Taylor
9.I.Smith (wk)
10.E.Chatfield

For what we're talking about, you can't really pick a side on what they might have done and might have averaged, you go with what has been done.

Great side - reckon I'd make two or three changes personally. I'd have Sid Barnes opening with Boycott (though Brown is a decent call, as is Bardsley or Barlow), I'd have Blackham behind the stumps (because I'm an old romantic) and I'd have Benaud over Bedi - as good with the ball, far better with the bat and with a cricketing brain that would have him rivalling - or even eclipsing - Bradman as skipper of this side.

Bishop over Bond is another potential change though I'd go with Bond too - both men can be filed in the "could have been anything" folder.

With regard to the A-team, I'd have thought we'd pick Pakistan players by first name - ie Saeed Anwar would be in contention for the S-team. Otherwise you'd have Wasim Akram and Zaheer Abbas in this side.

In that vein, Abdul Qadir would be my pick as a spinner in this side over Adams, and perhaps replace Saeed with Amla, who is a specialist no.3?

Yep, agree both points here. I challenge anyone to make a z-team.
