i know border and miandad were excellent middle order bats. but chappell was equally successful and he also made batting look like an art while the other two greats chose effectiveness over style. hairline decision but greg gets my vote. by the way, apologies to clive lloyd and doug walters - awesome players but these three were better as batsmen.

There’s been a lot of talk on another thread about pace bowlers succeeding in the subcontinent, however I’ve just noticed that for batsmen, New Zealand seems to be the country to succeed (e.g. Lara & Tendulkar both average 15-20 runs below their career averages in NZ).

So, here are the 1966-85 stats in NZ for the leading batsmen in this poll:

Allan Border: 3 tests, 44 runs @ 14.66 (0/0)
Clive Lloyd: 6 tests, 168 runs @ 15.27 (0/0)
David Gower: 3 tests, 69 runs @ 17.25 (0/0)
Zaheer Abbas: 7 tests, 236 runs @ 19.66 (1/0)

Javed Miandad: 6 tests, 435 runs @ 54.37 (1/2)
Greg Chappell: 8 tests, 786 runs @ 71.45 (3/1)

Btw, I’m kidding, but I did find it interesting that so many great batsmen struggle in NZ. Anyone know why?

EDIT: to be fair to Border, please note he went on to average 50.16 in NZ over his whole career.

I'd say Paddles would be the answer to that, alongisde Danny Morrison who was quite a good bowler.

sir richard hadlee???
Actually no. In NZ during 1966-85, Hadlee never got Border out, while Lloyd was dismissed only twice by Hadlee in his 6 tests and Abbas was dismissed 3 times in his 7 tests. Gower was dismissed twice by Hadlee in his 3 tests, so he is the closest to being called a Hadlee Bunny in NZ.

Tough choice but...Javed Miandad (and wouldn't it be fun to have him and Lillee in the same team? PS - Daniela Hantuchova - get well soon!!!

LOL, that would be awesome. Even though Chappell is better, it might be worth it just to see those two in the dressing room.

But Lara and Tendulkar average less than their career records in NZ too..and Hadlee only played against Sachin three times(when he was 16) and Lara didn't play against himat all. Could it be slow, seaming pitches?

And about Doug Walters - Engliah people of a certain age will wonder what the foss is about. No Test hundreds in England in four tours..and generally as easy a victim for John Snow as Mr Cullinan was for Warne. (or Gooch for Alderman).

No test hundreds but he did make 81, 86 and 88. Also, I think everyone has a place where they don't perform like they should, for example Miandad only averages 33.75 in 3 tours to the West Indies (btw, first tour he averaged 1.50, 3rd tour only 24.00, so it's a good thing that he had a good 2nd tour to bring his overall average up to 33)

That's because he couldn't get a cold enough beer. How did you expect him to concentrate? :D

so the indian coach makes it with virtually no opposition!!

aussie tragic! we will include miandad and border in the next poll as per plan. but since the joint third place winners abbas, gower and lloyd have got only one vote each can we leave them behind? i think it will be pointless trying to carry them over!
