For reference their stats from the 19th century (Australia/England matches only - sorry Lohmann and Briggs but SA were 0-8 then and their batsmen were averaging 10):

Peel (84-96) 20 matches 35 innings 101 @ 16.98 51.6 SR 1.97 Economy 5 5’fers 1 10’fer
Turner (87-95) 17 matches 30 innings 101 @ 16.53 51.2 SR 1.93 Economy 11 5’fers 2 10’fers
Briggs (84-99) 31 matches 45 innings 97 @ 20.55 50.9 SR 2.42 Economy 7 5’fers 3 10’fers
Spofforth (77-87) 18 matches 30 innings 94 @ 18.41 44.5 SR 2.48 Economy 7 5’fers 4 10’fers
Richardson (93-98) 14 matches 24 innings 88 @ 25.22 51.1 SR 2.96 Economy 11 5’fers 4 10’fers
Lohmann (86-96) 15 matches 30 innings 77 @ 13.01 42.9 SR 1.81 Economy 5 5’fers 3 10’fers
Trumble (90-99)* 19 matches 34 innings 63 @ 25.63 64.3 SR 2.38 Economy 3 5’fers 1 10’fer
Lockwood (93-99)* 8 matches 14 innings 26 @ 26.03 57.1 SR 2.73 Economy 2 5’fers

Trumble played til 1904, Lockwood til 1902.

Shoutout to George Giffen too who took 103 wickets @ 27 in Aus/Eng matches in the 1800’s - Briggs and Lohmann surpass him when their South African records are added, as well as dropping their own averages by 3 points each.

Man Lohmann should have really bowled more. Bowled 700-1900 balls less than anyone bar Lockwood

No need to apologise to Lohmann @Coronis ; his record still speaks for itself. I can't ignore that, and have voted for him, but do tend to think the English batsmen Turner and Spofforth faced were generally better than the Aussies Lohmann faced. It's close between those three.

Good poll.

Had it appeared in 1900, Spofforth would have won easily. The first genuine overarm bowler, with the brain and variations to thrive on improving pitches. Lohmann copied Spofforth but wasn't as fast. Turner was a throwback to the roundarm era and the most devastating on a bad wicket, more threatening than the steady Trumble. Giffen overbowled himself.

Valid point earlier about the Australians facing better batsmen in Tests. First-class cricket was a better indicator back then.

Richardson bowled fast all day, attacking the stumps and trading runs for wickets. His reputation lasted well into the the 20th century. Partner Lockwood could be equally effective but lacked consistency.

Some experts regarded Ted Peate as the best left-arm spinner of the 19th century. A more subtle bowler than Peel or Briggs.
