BCCI and Cricket Australia plan Twenty20 League

A lot of the wider plans have been revealed in this article.

New champions league to pay players millions

September 9, 2007

AUSTRALIA'S elite cricketers could soon be earning wages to rival the world's top footballers. And they won't have to surrender their baggy greens.

Players will be offered the chance to play in a newly established Twenty20 tournament expected to feature domestic teams seeking to qualify for an international play-off and a share of $US5million ($6.05million) in prizemoney.

HOW IT WILL WORK

- Australia, India, England and South Africa each hold their own domestic competitions. India's domestic competition will feature franchised teams.

- The top two teams from each country qualify for an international tournament, which will feature a $US5 million prize pool.

- Teams can bid for marquee players, while other players must stay within a salary cap.

- The first international tournament is expected to take place late next year.

- The top players will earn big money from Twenty20 without being frozen out of official cricket tournaments.

Money, stars, worldwide cooperation and high quality twenty20 cricket...cool!

It's a sensible idea really - just an Twenty20 Champions League. The idea has been around for about as long as Twenty20 has been going TBH. Presumably the section relating to a salary cap and 'marquee' players (an idea I'm don't really understand) only applies to India?

That $5m prize pool will interest the counties as well, definitely.

I think this is a great idea, I assume there is a gap in the international schedule for the four international teams so the star players will be available.

Checking cricinfo for late 2008.

October 2008

Australia in India (4 Tests)

November 2008

England in India (3 Tests & 7 ODIs)
New Zealand in Australia (2 Tests)
Bangladesh in South Africa (2 Tests & 3 ODIs)
Zimbabwe in Sri Lanka (2 Tests & 3 ODIs)

December 2008

England in India
South Africa in Australia (3 Tests & 5 ODIs)
India in Pakistan (3 Tests & 5 ODIs)
West Indies in New Zealand (3 Tests & 5 ODIs)
Sri Lanka in Bangladesh (2 Tests & 3 ODIs)
No gap at all there, will be interesting to see how this one works out.

Hmm two teams from each country. I reckon thats going to be the thing that stuffs it up. They tired that before with OD champions a couple years back in Perth. Got no coverage at all, as no cared even NSW and WA fans who had teams. I reckon they would have been better off getting six sides from all four countries. Let the tournment run as just before the India, South African and Australian season and just after the English season.

I don't understand the marquee players thing....How does it work? Can someone give me an example.

Let's say for example..New South Wales and Queensland make the Champions Leauge thing....they'd be able to buy players?
