Battle of the World Cup stars

The Divine Ponytail edges out Cafu by the odd point & Cannavaro makes it an Italian double.

Hopefully two rather more exciting match-ups today; four contenders, all of whom more than deserving of the "all-time great" sobriquet:

Round 2, Battle 5

Ferenc Puskas (Hungary/Spain)
World Cups: 2 (1954, 1962)
World Cup Appearances: 6
World Cup Goals: 4
Best: Runner-Up in 1954
Noteable for: Being the most magnificent of the Magyars who lost to West Germany in the final of 1954 after defeating them 8-3 earlier.

V

Garrincha (Brazil)
World Cups: 3 (1958, 1962, 1966)
Apps: 12
Goals: 5
Best: Winner in 1958 & 1962.
Noteable for: Being arguably the best dribbler to ever grace the highest stage and inspiring Brazil to the 62 title in Pele's absence.

Round 2, Battle 6

Franz Beckenbauer (West Germany)
World Cups: 3 (1966, 1970, 1974)
Apps: 18
Goals: 5
Best Performance: Winner in 1974
Noteable for: Being Germany's greatest ever player, inventing the role of sweeper and winning the trophy as captain and manager.

v

Eusebio (Portugal)
World Cups: 1 (1966)
Apps: 6
Goals: 9
Best: Semi-Finalist in 1966
Noteable for: Being the first African football superstar and the top scorer in 1966.

Garrincha, just edging the "galloping major", because of the wins.

Then for a staggering piece of inconsistency, I'll go for Eusebio

Clearly what's gone wrong with footie, lack of cool nicknames, all four of these had one.

:-O horrible battles, puts Cocu v cannavaro firmly in its place.

Garrincha was just amazing.

Second one is tough but will go with Beckenbauer for the overall record.

Garrincha for the showmanship and the wins ,just slightly ahead. He was a extraordinary dribbler and possesed remarkable skill. Harsh on Puskas ,but his club career is ,ore illustrious then his world cup career.

Franz Beckenbauer - One of the best football intelligence quotients ever. made Defending cool . Not only won it as a player but won it as a manager too ,with not the best of sides. Extraordinary career in World cups.
Again Harsh on Eusebio ,who was also a legend.

Eusebio's Portugal finished third. Until 1986 that was the only time they even qualified.
Don't recognise 3rd Place Play Offs as a method of ranking teams, tbh. Which is why I'm using "Semi-Finalists".

Exception being Zico, whose best effort was in 78 when there weren't any semis, but there was a play-off which Brazil won.

The Little Bird and Der Kaiser advance.

The next battle can't quite compare, but #8 is an interesting match-up between two countries' best players:

Round 2, Battle 7

Miroslav Klose (Germany)
World Cups: 2 (2002, 2006)
Apps: 14
Goals: 10
Best: Runner-Up in 2002
Noteable for: Being Germany's most reliable source of goals in the last two tournaments and overall top scorer in 2006.

v

Andres Escobar (Colombia)
World Cups: 2 (1990, 1994)
Apps: 7
Goals: 0
Best: Second Round in 1990.
Noteable for: An own goal against The US in 1994 with tragic consequences.

Round 2, Battle 8

Johan Cruyff (The Netherlands)
World Cups: 1 (1974)
Apps: 7
Goals: 3
Best Performance: Runner-Up in 1974
Noteable for: The Cruyff turn and being player of the tournament in 74, leading Dutch total football past all-comers, including reigning champions Brazil, before falling short in the final

v

Teofilo Cubillas (Peru)
World Cups: 3 (1970, 1978, 1982)
Apps: 13
Goals: 10
Best: Quarter-Finalist in 1970
Noteable for: Scoring five goals in both 1970 & 1978, twice leading Peru to the last eight and humbling the Scots.
