Battle of the Test Innings

Lara - as well as McGrath & Gillespie, we're talking about Warne & McGill on a 4th innings pitch. Plus there's more pressure in the 4th innings than the 2nd, and he had much less support that Waugh.

Walsh and Ambrose of the mid nineties aren't exactly second class bowlers.

Waugh for me.

This is the hardest battle yet, without question. Both of these innings are in the top 5 or so of recent history.

I'll go with Lara, because he had to work with the tail so much. A significant part of Waugh's innings came when he was working with his brother in their finest ever stand in test cricket, and it certainly took a bit of the pressure off Steve to have that support.

Interesting the similarities in the innings though. Both of them came as culminations of utterly brilliant series against the best team in the world at the time. Lara played a crucial role in the second test of that series as well, while Waugh's series against the Windies in '95 was one of the best of all time. Both batted at 5, with Waugh coming in at 3/73 and Lara at 3/78. Both won the match, making the series 2-1 in favour of their side. Amazingly, Waugh also scored 199 against Walsh and Ambrose in the Lara match, too.
