Battle of the Legends

adharcric

International Coach
Preliminary Round, Battle 20

We shall define a legend of cricket on the basis of the following criteria:

- An influential figure who made a significant impact on the way the game is played on the field.
- An influential figure who remained involved in and made significant contributions to the game off the field.
- A hero or an icon who served as an inspiration for others (cricketers as well as the general public) and will be remembered for years to come.
- Remember that a legend is defined not merely by cricket records but also by aura, impact and legacy.

Don Bradman (batsman, considered the greatest ever)

Harold Larwood (fast bowler, spearheaded the famous Bodyline attack)

This battle will close after 6 hours (or earlier if it's one-sided IMO) with a lead of at least 5. Otherwise, it will close after 12 hours.

I'm going for Bannerman although at the time that he made that first century neither he nor his fellow competitors actually knew what they were doing as it was only retrospectively decided that this was the first ever Test.

Sangakarra is certainly brilliant, but as far as a legend in his position goes Gilchrist is ahead.

Hate to be one of those people who bitch about how battles are run, but in retrospect it would have been better to vet some of the nominations of legends and do a quality-based filter of the original list, rather than immediately leap into battle mode. However, this is what we've gone for, and it is still looking good for an interesting battle.

Plenty of work by adharcric, which I appreciate in any case.

That would have been ideal, but when I asked everyone who I should exclude/include, I barely got any feedback. (partially my fault as I was too impatient) Didn't really have an option other than going ahead with the battles and ending the one-sided ones early.

That said, if at any time you feel a battle is useless (ie Bradman vs Atapattu), let me know and I'll declare the winner by default. That is the equivalent of filtering out the wannabes I suppose, or the best alternative at this stage.

Larwood :p

I'll vote for Sangakkara here. One of the players that've given Sri Lanka a big leap forward. And Bannerman's an aussie.
