His most famous knock was the blistering 104 he scored before lunch on the opening day of the 1902 Ashes Test at Old Trafford, an innings that contained 14 boundaries. It was more Twenty20 than early 20th century.

He was the first batsman to hit a ton in the opening session of a Test match all the more impressive as only three other batsmen passed 5.

(70)"We'll get 'em in bloody singles"
5th Test: England v Australia at The Oval, Aug 11-13, 1902 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo
Chasing 263 to win, England wobbled to 48-5 before Gilbert "the Croucher" Jessop's maiden Test century dragged them to within sight of the Australian total. With Jessop back in the hutch, Dick Lilley's dismissal brought Wilfred Rhodes to the crease to join George Hirst with just one wicket in hand and 15 runs still required for victory.

It was then that Hirst uttered his oft-repeated line and, although the story appears to be apocryphal, the two knocked off the runs
There were actually 9 singles - Rhodes snicked one to the boundary with 14 needed and at one point there was a 2, but one them was an overthrow

I really really want to vote for Trumper, but Flintoff-Lee was the iconic moment in a great series, so it gets my vote.

Singles.

Flintoff vs Trumper would make for a worthy final, let alone second round.

Tough, but going with Flintoff.

Hirst and Rhodes for the other battle.

As magnificent as Flintoff's gesture was, I'm going to opt for Trumper in this battle; he deserves a few more votes IMO, as every account I've read suggests that it was a truly extraordinary innings even by Trumper's standards. Battle worthy of a final.

Making it a 1902 double, it has to be the Kirkheaton Couple in the other, who while not getting it in singles provided the final romantic finish to one of the legendary games. McGrath's catch was pretty spectacular mind.

BTW is Jessop's innings in the self-same test still in the battle?
