Battle of Cricketers II - CW's Favorite Cricketer (now underway)

jan

State Vice-Captain
Selection is getting tougher, took half an hour think.

73 dravid
74 khan...imran and mahela in one battle, whyyyyy?
75 akram

bagapath

International Captain
Border - for being a paragon of virtue in a sport sullied by corruption and cheating and nepotism
Benaud - for keeping the romance of test cricket alive over six decades without becoming an old fart
Marshall - for being the most stylish cricketer in the most stylish sports team ever

Ok…

In the first – well, it says something about the quality of the trio when I rate the Big Cat a distant third. I adore Dravid

In the second one, Richie is a dead set legend but Imran combined all-round cricketing brilliance with knee-weakening (for the ladies, obv ) charisma like no one since Keith Miller.

Finally, the ridiculous deathmatch that is the third battle. I reckon all three of these blokes would make (or at least go bloody close to) my all-time favourite World XI. Seems crazy that one of them won’t even get a wildcard, but in the end Wasim Akram is probably my favourite bowler ever and takes this one by the narrowest of margins.
Sean has written a great piece. So I go along with this.

Edit. AB is one of my favorite Aussie cricketers but unfortunately he came across a thorough gentleman. I guess I will have to go with Dravid by a wafer thin margin

I suppose some meagre justifcation is in order. I went with Rahul because I think he's the chap we'd all like to be, lavishly gifted & a fearsome competitor but always a gentleman with it. A man who shows you can put body and soul on the line and still be a good bloke. His efforts in defeat in our summer just passed were little short of miraculous. If anyone's played better in a side who've been whitewashed they've done bloody well.

Richie because he's arguably the best ever television commentator the sport has produced & who even now at his ever advancing age puts most of Ch9 to shame, damning with faint praise as that may be. For anyone of my age who watched more telly than listened to the wireless his was the voice of cricket (with apologies to Peter West). That's even before we get to the captaincy and the playing, both of which he was reputedly a dab hand at.

&, as the cliche has it, last but not least, MDM for largely the same reasons as Rahul; a master (perhaps the master) of his trade and no-one to speak a bad word about him. I'd like to think I'd still be voting for him were he still hale and hearty (as he bloody well should be :(), but the "doomed genius" angle cannot help but tug at the heartstrings.

Dravid - How could I vote against the guy who has been giving the team I love his all.

Benaud - Love this old guy, something to do with the old cricket game where he is the commentator.

At the risk of being both a) sycophantic and b) Captain Obvious, it's fair to say that your justifications are never meagre. A pleasure to read.

As others have already said, those are some massive battles! I'll go with The Sean's votes, and explanation, below.

Ok…

In the first – well, it says something about the quality of the trio when I rate the Big Cat a distant third. I adore Dravid and hate voting against him, but for so many years growing up AB simply was Australian cricket. So it’s Border for me.

In the second one, Richie is a dead set legend but Imran combined all-round cricketing brilliance with knee-weakening (for the ladies, obv ) charisma like no one since Keith Miller.
