Supposedly it was a joke Ranji played on him at a League of Nations conference in 1920, which explained the dusky appearance of the Albanian entourage who made the offer - but if it was Ranji never coughed it in public and it makes a nice story

It's also the case that at the time the Albanian throne was for sale, which would have ruled out Fry who was perpetually skint, and I don't suppose he'd have fancied changing his name to Zog the second anyway
