Battle of Cricketers - CW's Favorite Cricketer

Camo999

State 12th Man
Harvey, the great man, probably my all time favourite cricketer.

A century in T20 cricket initially sounded very unlikely but Harvs hit three in the first few seasons and I believe still holds the record for the most centuries.

Also remember watching him belt an attack including Ambrose and Bishop all over the MCG in about 1996 for Aus A, finishing the match by smacking Kenny Benjamin straight over the sightscreen.

Having said all that, bowling and fielding were probably the stronger parts of his game, particularly at the international level. Could swing the ball, had the famed slower ball of course, and a pretty quick bouncer and yorker. Also one of the best fielders of their own bowling.

Unfortunately never played test cricket due to the strength of the Aus side at the time, he would have been interesting to watch at that level, particularly in English conditions.

Ian Harvey.

Spent most of his Victorian career being OK, and then pulling out a ridiculous match as soon as his spot was questioned. I remember his last district club (Northcote) nicknamed him Norman; as in Harvey Norman, interest free.

A few guys I know played in the game where he first started bowling, at about the age of 20, in the 2nds. He was playing for Dandenong as a keeper, and Camberwell had already knocked off the runs but had to play till five o'clock. So he asked for the pill, and proceeded to bowl wheels, pelting the two not-out batsmen with bouncers. A Victorian junior selector was on hand, and told some of his senior counterparts that they had a find: the rest is history.

Cricketer Of The Year
Thorpe, for the reasons given by yer man Brumby. Plus, his ugly runs were a lot less ugly than they might have been; a batsman whose style was much underrated imho.
