Battle of Cricketers - CW's Favorite Cricketer

zaremba

Cricketer Of The Year
Finding it hard to choose between Richie and WG. WG is generally a bit under-rated in these parts, but because I grew up with him and have lived my life watching the gradual melting of his face, Richie Benaud just gets my vote. TBH he should have retired about 10 years ago, and is becoming a bit repetitive and a bit tiresome in his old age, but he's a legend nonetheless.

Three of my favourite Cricketers there (Harbajan not being one of them), which obviously makes it a very tough battle. I'd rather spend a day of practise with Grace than Bradman, and Grace would have had a 60+ average on today's pitches. And it would have been great to talk to Benaud and Trueman about cricket.

It will have to Benaud, being in my opinion, the best commentator in sport.

As much as I love Richie, Fiery Fred for mine, anyone else heard any of his after-dinner speeches? Radio sport NZ used to play old archives from time to time & Fiery was brilliantly funny

Benaud, just from FST. Even in his dotage Richie considerably less curmudgeonly than Frederick Sewards was at a relatively young age.

Tough. Not really a fan of any of them, which is a change.

Fred Trueman because of this...

While bowling the batsman edges and the ball goes to first slip, and right between Raman Subba Row's legs. Fred doesn't say a word. At the end of the over, Row ambles past Trueman and apologises sheepishly. "I should've kept my legs together, Fred". "So should your mother," he replied.

That's tough: I nominated two of them, and have immense time for both of the others...

Trueman I think. 300 wickets in those days translates into how many wickets now, with the increased number of tests played? Think he would have given yer Ambroses and McGraths a run for their money. And beats them hands-down as a character.

But that means voting against Benaud, which kinda hurts. Life's tough.
