There's no answer to the question of whether you should bat or bowl first, it all depends on playing conditions. On a perfect Summers day with a good batting wicket in a day/night game you bat first every time. On an Autumnal day at Lords with a 10:30 start you bowl first.

You are Australian right?
Nope, well I suppose I could count, but I was born in New Zealand and our family moved here when I was 13 and a half years old (Jan 1999) and I've spent almost 9 years here, but I still hold a NZ passport.

As for batting first in a day night match, Arjuna Ranatunga did the opposite against Australia in the 1996 Final by bowling first because he knew about the factor the dew would have and thus making it more slippery for the bowlers, and considering he had Muttiah Muralitharan and Kumar Dharmasena (had a tidy career record, would be interesting how he would fare now) as his spinners (plus Aravinda da Silva and Sanath Jayasuriya would and were called apon with the ball) and you know what, it worked so well that they won the World Cup.

So there is definatly some merit in bowling first in a day night game, especially if chasing is your strong point.

Didn't realise it was for ODIs, so my choice wasn't what I meant.

In ODI cricket it's always better to bowl first I feel, that way your batsmen have more chance to pace their innings according to the total that they are facing.

I like Australia to bat first. That way you're likely to get at least 70 overs of cricket in a match.

Yeah, I like Australia to bat, because that's about the only realistic way you're going to have much of a chance of beating them.

That's a very 2006 attitude, and is no longer really accurate. For shame.

Merry Christmas by the way...

Yesss, India's disgraceful capitulations somewhat distorted that picture. :@

:-O It's Christmas Day in Australia now!
