Batsmen who spent their career in the wrong position

Steve Smith. He should have never given up his #3 spot to Labuschagne and he's just made it worse by choosing to open
Even if not technically true, the gist of this is. That summer when Smith batted 4 behind Marnus and kept coming in at 2-350 was where it started going downhill for him, you could tell he was frustrated. Did a lot better coming at 2-10

I don't now if the stats prove it, but feel like Root would fit that too. Star bats like a mini crisis to get their juices flowing.

You're eventually going to admit I was 100% right when I said Smith wouldn't average 30 as an opener, right?

Martin Guptill in Tests. Could've been 40+ at #5 but got shoehorned into opening, as so many have before him in NZ, and continue to be (Conway). We just cannot produce natural opening batsmen, Latham apart - who undersells his ability, too.

I think a lot of middling opening batsmen would have done better down the order because on average it’s simply easier. Not always, but most of the time unless you’re some sort of horrible starter against spin.
Michael Atherton would've averaged a lot higher if he'd never seen McGrath and a new ball.
