Whatever it takes!!!
Yeah, I consider 1-3 top order and 4-7 middle order. Sorry about the confusion.ah, well that makes sense.

Bairstow has been sensational in ODIs but what Buttler does is a lot more unusual, I think he is probably England's best ever ODI bat.Personally I think Bairstow is a better test match bat overall all things considered - I can’t justify arguing otherwise. His fc average is also miles better.
ODI comparison. When I consider that the most important thing for any team is a probably a flier and Bairstow averages 47.91 with 105.01 it’s hard not to vote for him considering the above paragraph. You can take the game away from opposition or dominate the chase from ball 1 - it helps the team and batsmen to come massively. That’s Bairstow’s value. That’s roughly 96-2 off 15.1 overs on average if Bairstow is both openers which is incredible.
By comparison Buttler as an individual gives you 38.72 at 118.66. On average that’s roughly 39 off 33 balls (5.3 overs) - 78-2 off 10.6 overs if there’s two of them.
Hard to compare as they bat different positions/roles and they are both ATG ODI batsmen for their roles. I would be inclined to value Bairstow higher by a whisker even just in ODIs as I value a flier a lot and he’s averaging nearly 50 doing it. Has to be said though, Buttler hasn’t had the chance to do the same role. I have to personally favour one over the other somehow (or I can call it a draw by default considering both ATG in their roles). Buttler is ahead in T20I , but that’s close too.
I think I would probably consider the sample size at 6 in tests not enough help for Buttler compared to his overall test and fc records to sway it to him. Over all 3 formats it’s Bairstow for me.

SlightSince it seems I can't redo threads (Lyon vs Harmer threads were merged despite a new public poll on the updated thread) I'll bump this. Not much to choose between them and Buttler has gone ahead of Bairstow for me in ODIs by a whisker after his recent innings. Still, the Bairstow incredible test hundred keeps him ahead just overall. I was surprised by the poll results at the time. The key here is Buttler is probably frozen out from tests whilst Bairstow will continue to play all three formats. I suppose in that sense I have to stick to Bairstow also. Interesting they have both played unbelievable innings recently in different formats.
Yeah no to that on buttler, Guy averages the same in fc as he does in test's, he's just not very good against the red ball. Better white ball batsmen have had the same issues. Both Butler and Bairstow are massive underachievers in tests because for some reason they tried to play majority of their test cricket like a proper test batsman when in reality had they taken the Gilchrist approach of batting at 80+ SR they would have averaged good 6-8 runs higher.
Nah I still believe his approach/mindset to long format cricket is wrong he likes to bat like a standard player and his game suffers be it tests or FC. Had Gilchrist looked to bat at a SR of 50 odd in tests I am sure he would have averaged 10 runs less, there is a certain batting tempo for each individual where there output is maximised Butler does not bat at a tempo in 4 day cricket which maximises his output.Yeah no to that on buttler, Guy averages the same in fc as he does in test's, he's just not very good against the red ball.
