Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

NZTailender

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Again, it's the WHO, not the WHAT. We're talking about the Australian test captain, VC and coach planning to cheat.

If it had just been Bancroft and some Junior players who had planned it, it wouldn't be the big deal that it is.
Bloke drinks and drives in a company car - gets caught, loses his licence. That's the law dealing with the underlying issue.

The company fires the bloke for the bad image it gives the company - that's the company dealing out their punishment relating to things beyond the law - image, philosophy, bad press, whatever you determine.

Seems like some can't discern between the two.

All these arguments fall apart though when you look at how the same thing has played out for other players.

Faf should have been banned too then. He was the South African test captain. He planned to cheat. He was caught cheating. He did it TWICE. He tried to deny it and didn't own up to it as well.

But no he was not banned because the offence he committed was a level 2 offence.

If you think Smith's intent to cheat is the key thing to punish here then you have to punish every player who's tampered with the ball because their intent was also to cheat.

I'm all for punishing him and think the icc should be harsher on everyone ball tampering but some of the grasping at straws people are doing to make out like Smith and Warner are the worst human beings is just absurd at this point.

The company doesn't fire the bloke or do anything, no one cares, media says nothing, fans keep on going on with their lives without making it an issue.

Same bloke drinks and drives in a company car for a second time - gets caught, loses his licence again. That's the law dealing with the underlying issues.

The company doesn't fire the bloke or do anything, no one cares, media says nothing, fans keep on going on with their lives without making it an issue.

A year later another bloke drinks and drives in a rival companies car - gets caught, loses his licence. That's the law dealing with the underlying issues.

Fans call for that company to ban that bloke for life/5 years/1 year for disgracing the company and act like that bloke is the devil and it's unprecedented.

Seems some can't see the problem with this.

Cricket Australia wasn't in charge of punishing Faf du Plessis so his charges are irrelevant.
This is 100% correct, but it's relevant in how some people are trying to make out like Smith is the devil. It's relevant in how people reacted to that vs how extreme some people are reacting to this.

Two different companies being held accountable by two different sets of fans. There is no consistency to be expected in this scenario.

Again, Faf's charges are irrelevant to Cricket Australia and their decision.

This might just eclipse the Stokes thread for amateur cricket fan pretensions in criminal and civic law.

Tell that to your Aussie fans then lol

We've been saying all thread it's an overreaction and have been dissecting the reasons for it:

> The 'Myth' of Australian Sportsmanship being challenged
> Smith be unlikable to the Australian public
> The team not doing well
> Influence of Social Media and 24/7 news cycle trying to spin outrage out of nothing
> Cricket Australia trying to maintain a certain brand image

It's 100% relevant though because no it is not two sets of fans. Most of the fans on here arguing for harsh punishments are not Australian. They do not support Australia. They are just arcing up because a player they don't like from a country they don't like is in trouble but they turned a blind eye and didn't say jack **** when a player from another country did something. It's the same people they are just reacting different because one person is from one team and is who he is and another is from another team. They are trying to talk about the intent as if that justifies why they should get these long bans when the intent is the same. They should grow a pair of testicles and just come out and say they don't like smith, they don't like australia, they want to see australia suffer and that's why they want a long ban. A real man would come out clean and admit this instead of all the straw grasping and excuse bullshit they are trying to throw forward.

Some have, some other fans of other countries have been asking for extreme bans and then going through multiple hoops trying to justify it for this situation but not other situations without wanting to openly admit why they want a ban.

Most of us are also trolling

Don't think anyone in this thread has sincerely asked for a life ban for Smith and Warner, Australian or not.

Never made an argument otherwise, nor argued it was different for anyone else.

Although I was 100% sincere when I suggested they should be evicted from Test status

I mean, it's not like they're going to be able to beat Afghanistan or Ireland with Smith banned anyways. May as well send them down to the Intercontinental cup. And England to, if recent results are to go by. We can then have the Ashes played in Zimbabwe with no camera crews, just the way the ICC would like it.

This all very true for a lot of the people "outraged" about this, only bit I don't disagree with is that it's not-Australians arguing for the harshest punishments. If anything it's the Australian casual fans that don't really understand what's going on that are calling for the harshest punishments because they feel betrayed.

Well if you can't send the Associates up might as well bring the Full members down.

Raza's rallying cry is going to answered in a ways he never expected.
