I think Smith has to resign - this isn't a spur of the moment thing, which in some ways you can excuse (but still expect the person to be suitably punished). This is premeditated and, worse still, you put the least experienced and most vulnerable player in the gun. No idea who replaces him as captain, as I don't think Warner is the right choice.
