Awful when test cricket has come to this

What difference does it make that MS Dhoni has bowled only 18 deliveries in his entire career. Flintoff, knew nothing about bowling when he made his England debut and now he is the no.1 all-rounder in the world.

Also, for years, Indias problem has been a lack of a batsman who can bowl part-time medium-pace. Now, when we are finally getting someone who can bowl part-time medium-pace in MS Dhoni, people are refusing to believe it and have went to the extent of saying that MS Dhoni shouldnt bowl:wacko:

I just cant understand the Indian fans. For years they look for something and when they finally get it, they just dont beleive it and just dont know how to handle it.
The problem here is that you know absolutely nothing about Dhoni's bowling abilities. Do not compare him with Flintoffs case. This is bordering on the ridiculous. Flintoff was a proven bowler before he even made his international debut. Dhoni has no proven bowling credentials, and you might as well promote Laxman as a medium pace option if you're doing so for Dhoni on such flimsy grounds. You're latching onto an instance of him bowling in the nets as if he were a huge revelation. Everybody bowls in the nets every now and then. Even Sachin and Sehwag have bowled medium pace in the nets when the bowlers are unavailable/tired. Why not go with them for your 4-5 overs of medium pace ? Because a keeper bowling is a more romantic idea ? You're just attempting a stab in the dark because it seems a neat idea to have a keeper who can bowl. The only hitch is that he actually needs to be a good bowler for this to even take off. Unless you can come up with proof of any bowling talent on his part, stop speculating. Everyone realises that a keeper who can bowl is useful to have. Only thing is they wisely wait for some proof of such talent to emerge before going to town with it.

Andrew Flintoff knew a lot more about bowling than Dhoni does and also knew a lot less about wicketkeeping. Flintoff had 4 FC wickets before he played for England. He got Kallis for his 5th, then took another 10 before he played another Test match. Flintoff was marked as an allrounder from very early in his career. Dhoni has been 'keeping wicket for the majority of his career. Dhoni may be epic, but it's not as simple as you think to become a decent bowler.

What has Dhoni shown to suggest that he can bowl part-time medium pace? Simply doing the deed is not evidence of him being good enough to do it with any worth. Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul can bowl legspin.

The point is that there's nothing to suggest that there's anything to be excited about. The man bowled an over in a dead Test on a dead track and got hit for 13 runs. Suddenly he's worthy of filling Ganguly's shoes? Surely you jest.

I dont get it. Who is this "Amit"? and What "fever" I am having?

After Mr Mxyzptlk said that the "Amit" in question is not a cricketer, now can I ask that is he a member out here on Cricketweb?
The fever is India-obsession/sensation-clouds-my-judgement fever. It's common with the likes of Balaji and Dhoni.

The Amit that was referred to is a member who was banned for being a bit too feverish and taking it way too far.

Flintoff had been bowling since 1995 and had to fight his way into a very strong lancs side.

Dhoni should stick to wicket keeping and batting, he is much more useful if he can consistently score runs at six and perform well behind the stumps because then it allows the luxury of playing five bowlers, and if the indian selectors want medium-pacers there's plenty of derek pringle-types in india i'm sure.

Now shut up about this hogwash of having the wicket-keeper bowling regularly please.

You what?!

Flintoff was certainly not initially selected as a specialist batsman.

So you'd ignore someone like Ganguly then because of a perceived superstar bowler who's only ever bowled 18 balls in "competitive" cricket (and the quotes are because he's brought on at the death of games)

It looks as if you people are getting after me as though I suggested that MS Dhoni became a regular medium-pacer in the Indian team. What I meant to say that MS Dhoni, can become a part-time medium-pacer for India and even if he bowls as much as what Yuvraj does, like getting 3-4 overs once in every 4-5 matches depending on the conditions, then even that much amount of MS Dhoni's part-time medium-pace will be enough.

Also, Sachin used to try out his medium-pacers once, but then he never really had the pace and none out of Sehwag, Dravid, Laxman and Yuvraj can bowl part-time medium pace and Ganguly is already out of the ODI side. That leaves only MS Dhoni as someone who can bowl part-time medium pace.

Also, when MS Dhoni bowled, he bowled at as much pace as Irfan Pathan without any real practice. Now, if he can practice his medium-pace bowling, he might be able to bowl in the 130s. He did bowl in the 120s when he bowled in the 2nd test and even got the new ball. A part-time medium pacer who can bowl in the 120s-130s can be useful for India in ODIs.

Also, come on people, if Taibu can do it for Zimbabwe, why cant MS Dhoni do it for India?

Although MS Dhoni, should focus mainly on his wicket-keeping and batting which are far more important to India, but then when he does seem to have the potential to become a decent medium-pacer, so that ability cannot be ignored. Also, players with an extra ability are useful in todays cricket, especially in ODI cricket. So if MS Dhoni, has some bowling ability, he should definitely work on it. Also, who knows, we might see another all-rounder emerge out of MS Dhoni.

Also, MS Dhoni, was in football earlier as a goal-keeper with only a bit of cricketing ability. When his cricketing ability was discovered he became a cricketer. So now similarly, he is a wicket-keeper in cricket with a bit of bowling ability, so why not have him develop it?

Taibu does it because he has to because the rest of his bowlers are getting tonked.

A goal-keeper has a lot in common with a wicket-keeper i.e. fast reactions, flexibility, ability to judge where the ball is going.

Bowling on the other hand is completely different line and length have to be considered, variation, pace plus actually working on an action that doesn't lead to injury.

The very fact he went for 13 in a dead-match suggests he has nothing of these and would be eaten alive in an actual ODI when batsmen are looking to pick off easy-medium pace bowlers.

Face it you've struck gold in a wicket-keeper worth his place as a batsmen don't get greedy and start pushing for more, Dravid only bowled him to keep his pace-men fresh.

Dhoni is a Batsmen/wicket-keeper not flippin' superman.:@

Potential based on 18 balls 8-)

And he does have the extra ability - the keeping wicket thing.

Depends what you call fairly high - certainly nowhere near International level.

I think we have talked more about Dhoni's bowling abilities than Dhoni himself...

Andrew Hall is someone who has bowled, batted and kept wicket, and held his own in international cricket..

What's the fuss? He went for 13 in his only over, he has only bowled 18 balls in Ranji Trophy cricket, he obviously has little to no potential in his bowling, there are 10 other people who can bowl in the team. Why does he have to bowl? The only reason he bowled in the Faisalabad test was because the match had become pointless and the Indians just wanted to have a bit of fun. I think he does enough for the team with his batting and bowling, the mere thought of him bowling at international level is laughable.
