Australia's next ODI spinner

Haha, so proud of you Fuller.

I know I've orchistrated his rise from obscurity on the forum, to a ridiculous point where he went from pretty under-rated to "He must play in the First Test". His FC form this season has been extremely lax so far, more statistically so than how he's actually bowled, but lax all the same. However, in his few OD appearances so far, he's looked very capabale. He knows how to out-think batsmen when they're going after him, which I believe is a very important skill.

Although his Top End tour was incredible and his games this season have been proficient, it's a fair call to say Cullen or Hauritz are ahead of him.
But would you still like Heal if he got a proper haircut, that is the question... :p

Chris Simpson could be in with a shot, given his batting ability. Will probably be the captain of QLD next year and has been in pretty good form this year. If he keeps that up over the next few years he could be a chance, but Hauritz is definitely has to be the front runner.

He does have batting ability, but has shown absolutely none of it in one day cricket.

His 2/59 wasn't extremely poor by any means. And I'd take Fuller's opinion on Australian Domestic Cricketers above yours any day of the week.
Obviously, as Fuller has never stood for me saying an Australian player is in some way poor.

He's certainly risen of late and is looking really good. I don't see why he can't be in contention.

So, I wonder who's watched more than 1 or 2 of said matches in the last couple of years then?
Pretty much every one day domestic match in Australia is shown on Foxtel these days, so that wouldn't be even close to as hard as you're suggesting. I've probably seen 75% of his games in the last two years.

Annnnnyyyywaaaayyy...

Hauritz's length is far too easy to read out of the hand, for mine. Batsmen in Australian domestic cricket aren't the greatest at using their feet to their spinners but they ones who do have tended to get on top of Hauritz at times. He doesn't get over and around the ball with his fingers when he releases it - instead getting front on and trying to impart what is essentially parallel side spin on the ball. Surprisingly, he has managed to employ variations of flight and pace even with his release, but he doesn't get any drop or drift on the ball so any batsman worth his salt should be able to pick the length early and get down the track (or go on the back foot) when necessary. This worries me a great deal for ODI prospects - he needs to try to impart some more overspin on the ball and get the seam at 45 degrees.

That leaves Cullen. He's probably not ODI class, especially not at this stage, but he wouldn't be wouldn't be absolutely embarrassed like I fear Hauritz could be. So he'd be my pick, reluctantly.

In reply to those who suggested a four man pace attack, it could well and probably should happen in most conditions, but there will always be a spinner in the squad or just on the fringe of it to give Australia options (especially in the subcontinent), even if he doesn't play often, so the topic is worth discussing regardless of the makeup of the regular eleven.

Right, then, I was pretty careful not to actually suggest anything. I did wonder, as people have tended to talk a lot about watching this-and-that domestic cricket, but that a network would televise nearly every game is fairly remarkable.

I still wonder who watches every or near enough every game, mind. Certainly Fuller who never seems to post much these days. Even I don't watch every domestic game of the hundreds (almost all ODers) shown on Sky every season.

Anyone else wish Dan Cullen didn't roll his sleeves up? That annoys the hell out of me.

The Domestic Cricket schedule is fantastic at the moment. Nearly every week there is a game on Wednesday and then there'll be a weekend game usually as well. I don't have Foxtel though..

I've watched a ****load of ODD stuff as well, but I don't think Cullen's any better than Haurtiz re: dip. Cullen's balls float and stay in the air for ages for someone who bowls at 90kph. Half the time I think a ball is going to drop short of a length and it ends up being a full toss.

What do Aussies see in Dan Cullen? He was the worst overseas player I have ever seen- in the game I saw him play for Somerset he was outbowled by Gareth Batty. He looked a bog-standard county spinner, not some great in the making. Gareth Batty and Ray Price took about half the Somerset wickets between them, Cullen didn't take a single one. He didn't even look like taking one. He was so bad Somerset didn't want him back after he went away for Australia A training.

I think Batty is a better bowler - at least in the longer version, which says a lot in a way given I said earlier that I'd have Cullen as the frontrunner for the Australian ODI role. I never thought Batty was as bad as was made out but he's certainly not international standard. It shows my lack of faith in the other options, even purely from a potential basis, rather than any hopes I have for Cullen dominating world cricket, though.
