They aren't little darlings though, they're just sad englishmenObviously never seen a lower league game
Lolling at the thought you think people coming here to watch soccer will see afl and think "ooo that's a better sport than the one i've just flown half way around the world to watch my country for, where do i get one of those singlets and a pair of tight shorts".I'm a bit torn by it. On the one hand it will be a nightmare for the next decade and will threaten AFL (not the whole thing, but some of the side effects might be dire) on the other hand it'll offer many opportunities for this country and if so many of my compatriots want it, then let them be happy. Also could offer more opportunities for the AFL when people come here and realise how much more superior it is to soccer. Also, do not want to lose out to America and Qatar on principle. We have a great track record for putting on excellent sporting events and no other country, IMHO, is more qualified.
Other than junior participation numbers, I don't see either the AFL or NRL having anything to be concerned about from soccer, with or without the WC. Both will continue to be the preeminant winter sporting codes in their respective states for the foreseeable future, with soccer merely boosting its income over the summer months, and becoming more financially stable.I'm a bit torn by it. AFL is starting from such a low base internationally that any publicity is good publicityLolling at the thought you think people coming here to watch soccer will see afl and think "ooo that's a better sport than the one i've just flown half way around the world to watch my country for, where do i get one of those singlets and a pair of tight shorts".

Seriously though, you don't think that whilst here people won't want to sample some of the Australian stuff if they have time? IMHO there will be opportunities for the other codes if they play their cards right.haha, gotta love an optimist
Maybe culturally, such as throwing a boomerang, cuddling koalas, drinking fosters, hotting up mazdas and bashing wives, but as far as sampling other sports I'd say probably not. Whilst the other codes may be able to get some exposure, the people who have travelled over are here for one sport - soccer. Just as people who travel to Melbourne from Geelong for the Grand Final are there for the AFL, so to are the people from other countries coming to Australia for soccer. Whilst here, they'll live, breathe and drink soccer with scant regard for any of the other local leagues going ons.Seriously though, you don't think that whilst here people won't want to sample some of the Australian stuff if they have time? Yeah, very surprised if they dontNah I'm pretty sure you will, although I'm not sure on the mail over your side.

While there may be an opportunity for some sampling programs, I'd give little hope of someone coming over from Poland or Chile and going back home saying what a great game AFL/Rugby/League is.
They may well say what a great country Oz is but I'd hold little hope of them taking a sherrin/Gilbert/Steeden back with them and knowing what the hell they are meant to do with it.
Didn't happen, sadly. The bastard's appealing his suspension.
