If lehmann doesn't pick the team i dunno how the hell you actually evaluate his performance beyond the very simple "we won/lost but no thanks to the coach"

Lehmann definitely should be the chief selector. He's going to have the best relationship with Smith to be able to give him the team that the captain needs, he's the one whose head is on the chopping block.

I'm coming around to the idea that selectors are just there because it's how we've always done it, rather than being functional in the current method.

Coach gets some selection consultants in a formal role, uses them but he takes the slack - not Hohns, Chappell, etc.

Thought Cowan's point was more about the idea that one good match shouldn't push someone into the spotlight this much.

Maybe the coach should go and the selectors stay? Mods how can I change my name to Chappelli?

Actually since the coach spends all his time with the team the selectors can go and see the fc games and assess the players first hand so I think there is still a justification for them.

Just employ Australia's 2015 Ashes team selection practice and rotate various Marshes in the vain hope one of them will produce something good.

Yeah John Buchanan's article (which I didn't read but saw reported about) seems to be how I'm feeling about it. Give the coach the main job.

He (Swampy) actually left the Australian set up around the time Shaun was making his FC debut.

Interesting to read Ed Cowan blasting the suggestion of Jake Lehmann getting into the Test side as it's rare for a current player to be so openly against another player getting selected (although I think Cowan said similar things about ODI selections in the past).

Sure, Lehmann's overall record may not be outstanding (although a FC average of 44 is pretty decent) but I can't help Cowan's views are driven by his own situation and perhaps some underlying resentment with Darren Lehmann over how he was cast out pretty soon after he was made coach.
I'm not a fan of Cowan - you are a very average cricketer sir. And your middle class meets hipster leanings won't do anything to disguise that.

I like Cowan. I also think he is upper middle class at least.

With Bird joining the bowling camp in Brisbane I think this probably means we are less likely to see a surprise bat or keeper named for the First Test.

The Ashes is still seen as the biggest series so I cant see Carey, Patterson, Lehmann, Bancroft etc playing (unless we are losing).

I think Ponting has it right re Cartwright at six for the first test. Renshaw's struggles might open the door for Bancroft to open, but I'd keep Renshaw to start with. Nev should be keeper.

Warner
Renshaw/ Bancroft
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
Cartwright
Nev
Starc
Cummins
Lyon
Haze

I think will be the side.

Cartwright's pair didn't impress me much. Pressure was on and he carks it. Yes I hear he averages 50 in FC. Anyone can smash around Fekete and Stekete and all the other domestic scrubs going these days

Maxwell for 6
