Australian test selection 2020/21

Can't see the logic in calling for Maxwell. He's an ODI specialist, and an erratic one at that, and one short ODI series and he's suddenly a test player.

Yeah, no. 50-over cricket has nearly always been his worst format. Been a better red-ball player than 50-over for Vics. That's why it's frustrating that he's never got a decent run in the Test side.

Calling him a T20 specialist would be a much less worse call.

Maxwell was one of if not the best performing shield batsmen around the time of Smith and warner's bans right? There have definitely been points where he's warranted test selection.

Travis made a ton literally in his last game..wtf are you blokes on dropping him jeez
Head averages 29.30 in his last 7 Tests. Take out the 114 in his 2nd last Test and he'd average 19.89. Easy to see why he could be dropped

Rather have KP replace Wade than Head but either way he's got to be in the mix for sure imo

A surprise jack Wildermuth call up would not surprise me if he starts the season well.
I like Wildermuth, but nah.

Honestly think people are trying to get too clever here, not at all a believer in trying shite for the sake of trying shite. Would prefer KPat over Wade myself but it's hardly like that would solve all our batting problems overnight.

Frankly opening is a bigger, albeit in the longer term, cause for concern

Burns/Warner is fine for now but how many more years are we going to get out of Warner, and will Burns start making some runs? It's a pretty big concern that the guys who are coming through in the shield are as bad as Harris was.

Tim Ward will be opening for Aus within 3 years

I should have typed LO rather than specifically ODI. Has never warranted a decent run in tests.
Just as bad as your last call. He absolutely did.

To expand on that, if you genuinely want to know, as someone said earlier Maxwell was one of the best Shield batsmen for a few years. Better than some players who did get stints in the Test side. Unfortunately since then he's hardly been able to string games together for Victoria because he's constantly in the ODI/T20 side when Shield games are on. Makes it hard to push your case.

He did have a couple of bad tests in England admittedly but he never got a real shot against Pakistan and was good against New Zealand. Compare to Wade who did nothing against New Zealand.

Maxwell has played 7 Tests with none of them in Australia. Could he be the only Test cricketer that never played a home Test?

He should have at least played at home vs India when the banned trio were out.

Gonna go ahead and say no to that, probably heaps of players that only played 1, 2 or 3 Tests that were overseas.

Maxwell's Test career has been a joke, every time he's been thrown in it was an Asian Test in challenging conditions, then come the home summer on roads they give other hacks the spots. He's like the opposite of Joe Burns who's only got picked in nice friendly home conditions

That is purely your opinion. Plenty of players have performed well in Shield games without receiving a Test call-up.
I stand by my opinion that he never warranted a decent run in Tests.
In 7 Tests on the subcontinent, including 2 against minnows in Bangladesh, and, in 14 innings he averaged just 26.08 with just one half ton. On the spin-friendly wickets he took just 8 wickets at 42.63 with an ordinary strike rate of 57.75. These are hardly the figures of a player having claims for an all-rounder berth, let alone a batting position. There have been plenty of players who performed better in Tests yet played fewer than Maxwell.
On a personal note, you need to back down from calling poster's opinions "bad calls". When it comes to opnions there are no right or wrong or good or bad calls. All members are free to voice their opinions ... a simple "I disagree" is far better than your present mode of debate.

There seems to be two seperate points of argument here. Would Maxwell be a viable middle order option in the current day and age? I'm unsold. Was he handled in a shoddy manner by the selectors around the time Smith and Warner were banned? Absolutely IMO

One thing I note about Maxwell, in only 14 Innings he has batted in every position down to #8. Can't be a good way to start a test career batting in a different spot every game
