Going forward I'd like to see:

Harris
Pucovski
Labuschagne
Smith (c)
Head
Patterson
Carey

Harris is just about to get things together, I can feel it

Give Pucovski a go down the order first. And I'd rather Smith just piled on the runs without the pressure of captaincy.

I had him there originally instead of Head, and Khawaja/Burns at the top but then I knew you ****s would whinge about me leaving Head out

Can’t have two Victorians in the side, let alone opening. They’re cricketing cancer. Bad enough I have to go down there in a fortnight for a weekend.

As far as I remember the only times he has actually opened in top level cricket is a couple of 50 over games for Australia A. And now suddenly people are saying he's a possible test opener, seems bizarre

Only because there's no room for Pucovski at 3-6 with Labuschagne, Smith, Head and Patterson. And he would have opened in Aus A FC games as well if Burns did not get ill and become a late addition to the squad.

Feel free to not consider him the next big thing.

For me though, 188 in his 2nd FC game and one of only 8 Aussies to get a double hundred before his 21st birthday, I am happily considering him the next big thing ;)

You don't establish young players by throwing in the deep end, unless they're specialist openers and already performing at FC level.

He bats 3 for Vics with Dean averaging 19 as opener so he was in for the new ball anyway. Its not as if he bats 6 in the shield and then asked to open.

Plus in my earlier post I predicted Pucovski would be moved up to open for the Vics next season given Deans lack of output.

Just let Smith open and fill the rest of the top order with whomever in Australian cricket has the best forward defence.

Yes at this stage Pucovski opening is dumb. As I said it was a potential team "going forward", and I just want him in there somewhere.

KPat seems like the type who could make it as an opener if needed though, sort of in the Simon Katich mould

Just let Smith open and fill the rest of the top order with whomever in Australian cricket has the best forward defence.
It would save the trouble of waiting through the inevitable 2/20 start before we get to the see the champ stride to the crease

You are missing the point. I do absolutely believe there is a fair bit of talent there, but I don't think any batsman that inexperienced should be fast tracked in. I would much rather go with someone who has actually proved their worth over a couple of seasons, rather than picking some kid just because he might be a superstar one day.

Look at Haseeb Hameed for an example of just how badly wrong it can go

It can go right though. Fast tracking young talent isn't always a bad idea. Though in Pucovski's case it's probably not the best given his recent mental challenges.

Gavin Robertson mentioned yesterday that he had heard whispers from within the Aussie camp about Khawaja’s lack of work ethic

Robbo is Steve Waugh’s best mate

Tontine might struggle to make it back

Can certainly work well with bowlers, but with batsman here in Australia at least, I generally think you need at least two or three full Shield seasons before being a viable Test option. I don't subscribe to the Greg Chappell talent identification ideology at all really
