I think you'd see it as a positive in the sense that most of the contenders have had at least some time in the middle, but ideally you'd want blokes churning out tons I suppose.

Jordan Silk having a decent start to the season for Tassie. Probably as consistent as he's ever been tbh. made a ton and three 50s so far this season in five matches. Not outstanding in historical terms, but decent nonetheless.

I just don't see how Head is nailed on. Did they watch him during the ODI series? His feet were set in concrete.

If it were up to me it'd be between M Marsh and Head to secure the final batting spot (since they're already in the squad, if it were up to me neither would be close)

I’d play both and bench Travis. Because I like the feel of our middle order if Khawaja bats at three, I’d play Cus Harris if it came to a choice versus Handscomb. If they’re playing Handscomb then either he or Darsh bat at three and we look wobbly enough without that happening.

I really dislike finch opening. It's a bad position for him in red ball cricket. He's much better in the middle order.

Also Head is a better all rounder than M Marsh.

From the squad:

Khawaja
Harris
Head
Finch
S Marsh
Handscomb
Paine

I'd have picked Burns in the squad.

No remember, he had a good enough start to his career that he was playing Australia A in 2012 or 2013.

Then everything went to **** fast.

Yeah there was talk about him being a good shot at a test spot for a while. Not a long while mind you.

Head at 3 feels wrong. i would definitely rather Khawaja, Marsh or Handscomb there, maybe even Finch.

I don't want Marsh any higher than 5 tbh. He's getting old now and we need to squeeze every run we can out of him. Batting him up the order makes him vulnerable.

You dont think Head is vulnerable batting up the order from his usual spot for SACA?

He's still surprisingly young too. Still wouldn't think of picking him ahead of Bancroft let alone Renshaw.

Hazelwood

I like Doolan, but honestly I never seroiusly thought he was any chance of a recall. It's only recently he has actually remembered how to make more than one score of note per season.

Back to the drawing board, I would be aiming for more young blood, so something like:

M Renshaw
M Harris
U Khawaja c
P Handscomb
K Patterson
M Stoinis
A Carey+
P Cummins
M Starc
N Lyon
J Hazlewood vc

JRichardson THead JBurns CTremain on the fringes.

Having said that, Mitch Marsh excluded the squad picked isn't too bad. Burns and Renshaw obviously should have been picked but given Renshaw's shield form which has been below par, Harris is a decent alternative.

Mitch Marsh really needs to spend a season or two in county cricket to sharpen up his game.

The problem is that in Australia at the moment you can probably throw a net over about ten guys and they'll all give roughly the same results.

Funny you could have said the same thing circa-2000, except the "same results" would have been averaging 50 in Test cricket, now it's struggling to crack 30

Nah my drawing board would not want Marsh due to his inconsistency and age plus the other 5 bats ive picked dont really bowl. Australia need some sort of fifth bowling option.

What happened to test squad being reduced to 12 two days before the test? Rediculous that players don't know if they're playing, or even what batting position the day before the test starts
