Australian test selection 2018/19

They're just such nothing numbers though. Nobody with more than four tons across two years, fmd.

The normal awards that everyone else has
Shame Pucovski is seemingly unavailable for a time.

We could use the story of a 20 year old coming good in the test team. Apparently SWaugh is a huge fan. I wish him all the best.

I was surprised with those numbers of total tons made in the FC seasons since the mid 90s.

I wouldn't have thought in recent years that we would be anywhere in the vicinity of 40 or 50 in total.

Just did the numbers on a couple of seasons:

Season
2017/18
2007/08
1997/98
Total Tons445470
# of Players with Tons333538
# of Players with 2+ Tons91118
Most Tons by a Player354
3+ Tons
(Test players in italics)
M Renshaw (3)
M Wade (3)
S Katich (5)
B Haddin (3)
D Marsh (3)
M Di Venuto (3)
J Langer (3)
C Rogers (3)
L Harper (4)
D Hills (4)
M Hayden (4)
A Symonds (4)
T Moody (3)
J Langer (3)
D Jones (3)
R Davison (3)
M Hussey (3)
R Campbell (3)

So from this (limited) sample, it looks like:

  • The number of players scoring centuries is roughly the same
  • The number of centuries has declined
  • Less players are making multiple centuries, or having big years (3+ tons)
  • Less non-Test players are making multiple centuries (i.e. there's a reduction in depth).

So if Shield form means anything, here are the leading run scorers

Harris - 276 @ 276
Wade - 249 @ 83
Pucovski - 243 @ 243
Lehman- 220 @ 110
Doolan - 207 @ 51.75
Smarsh - 178 @ 89

Copeland averaging 70 with the bat and 17 with the ball.
Test 'star' Labuschagne averaging 76 with the ball and 15 with the bat.

I know Tremain made the A tour but I do wonder if he is actually ahead of Boland for higher honours.

The Brown Nosed Gnome will use Renshaw falling short as a justification to include Kelly in the First Test as a "bolter".

My First Test team.

1. M RENSHAW
2. A FINCH
3. U KHAWAJA
4. T HEAD
5. P HANDSCOMB
6. M MARSH
7. T PAINE
8. P CUMMINS
9. M STARC
10. N LYON
11. J HAZLEWOOD

12. S BOLAND

If Khawaja is unfit it gets interesting, however I think Shaun Marsh gets a reprieve if his butt heals. Boland rewarded for his early season performances

I get he’s now the incumbent, but find it hard to feel like Funch earned his spot in the first place. I like him and hope he does well, just for me he’s got plenty to prove still. Good start to his career though.
