I said his record to date has been pretty hopeless. That's it. Not that he doesn't have the potential to improve it.

The word 'hopeless' has its own implications, whether you are referring to his record or his ability. Why would you say his 18 ODIs to date are devoid of promise, when he has only been in the team as a band-aid anyway? The only thing hopeless about it was the chance of him ever getting a regular spot with Gilchrist as the incumbent.

Because back in that day, he seemed pretty devoid of promise. Not that I actually said so in so many words.

Hopeless may suggest to you a different thing it does to me.

It will be interesting to see how this is done this year. Especially with the format being of one-on-one series, it makes it more difficult for these players to be "rested" during live rubbers. Whereas with the tri-series, you could gamble a bit and rest key players.

Frankly speaking i think rotation policy should be used and players who have had to carry huge workloads in the test matches need to given a bit of a rest for the ODI games, there are plenty of promising batsmen and bowlers at the domestic level who could be given a bit of a run during this period.

There are plenty of promising cricketers at state level who can fill in at international level. The last thing we want is more injuries to people like johnson and Lee who have had to carry the baulk of the workload. I would atm like to see some experimentation with some of the state players and see how well they perform at international level.

With Australia losing the test series I think they'll go all out to win the ODI's.
And that would certainly be the wrong way to go, a bloke like Johnson could be on the brink of breaking down with the number of overs he has send down this season, and Ponting too has a long lingering wrist problem for which he was advised some time-off from the game, they are much better off missing a few home ODI games atm to ensure that they are fit and fresh for their upcoming gruelling schedule.

I only see justification for resting Ponting and Johnson for a few games during the rest of the Summer (preferably from tomorrow until the 1st ODI against Sth Africa). Perhaps Haddin could be rested if there are any dead rubber ODIs.
